Good story. Like you said, the craziest thing is that since the goalposts were at the goal line, the Saints hadn't even crossed midfield, and the ball was kicked from their own 37.

The irony is that it seems I recall a possible controversy regarding whether it was within the rules since it was an unconventional foot.

Yeah, the Cowboys wanted to get his shoe outlawed. Guy had half a foot and they wanted to make him wear a whole shoe. Said he had a competitive advantage. D.D. thought that was stupid.

Well, it wasn't the half shoe that was an issue. It was the fact that he had a steel plate on the end of the shoe. I can imagine something like that creating a cometitive advantage, although I think personally that his handicap more than offset it.

As I mentioned in another post, yesterday's kick was from over 5,000 feet altitude, and Dempsey's was at sea level. The air's a lot thinner at Denver.

If it's like golf, a ball goes about 10% farther at Denver than at sea level; so they'd have to reduce yesterday's kick by around 11%. Or at least put an asterisk by it.

You can't put an asterisk on Mother Nature...

atmospheric conditions in a given location are what they are in outdoor football. If you go that route then why not put an asterisk on all kicking stats recorded in a dome.

Just kidding about the asterisk..

and just saying that Dempsey's kick 43 years ago is far more impressive than the one yesterday any way you look at it.

well, with that UCF bidness, it could be a glove for a half footed pugilist

I think what might be more amazing...

was the catch that set up Dempsey's field goal. But nobody ever talks about that.
