If you want to understand the Left's opposition to DeVos look no further than this:

pull quote from article:

"What makes Mrs. DeVos seem so threatening to the teachers' unions and their political allies?

She has, for more than 20 years, been promoting programs, laws and policies that enable parents to choose which schools their children will attend -- whether these are charter schools, voucher schools or parochial schools".

it continues:

"Some of these charter schools -- especially those in the chain of the Success Academy schools and the chain of the KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) schools -- operate in low-income, minority neighborhoods in the inner-cities, and turn out graduates who can match the educational performances of students in affluent suburbs. What is even more remarkable, these Charter schools are often housed in the very same buildings, in the very same ghettos, where students in the regular public schools fail to learn even the basics in English or math".

I posted about this very phenomenon a week or two ago on here, inviting many on this board who favor continued Leftist control over inner city Public schools to explain how this can be so?

No one offered to explain it, even while they argued for more Government funding to fix non performing Public schools or even blamed Black Families themselves for the Government school's ongoing failure educating their precious children.

DeVos and school choice vouchers are not only a threat to a primary Democrat voting block (Blacks) but it also threatens the powerful vote generating/funding mechanism cultivated among the Teacher Unions, who exist to protect the Left's control over Education, not to educate poor Black kids.

So the battle against DeVos is not really over Education, it's over the Left's very political survival.

Why are people surprised today that she has the
appointment?

I'm not. I'm glad she's there. She'll be fabulous for poor kids who deserve better choices than these horribly inefficient Public schools.
