Not only did they offer him money, but they offered him a small percentage of the franchise. Anyone ever heard of a team doing that? Let's just say they offered him 5% of the club. In April of 2010, the Cardinals were appraised to be worth 488 million dollars according to Forbes. That's 24.4 million dollars of value from the franchise, plus whatever his contract was worth.

What would be the purpose of offering that to Albert? Power? He would have to be involved in any financial decisions, trades, and a bunch of other stuff. If you were a 31 year old on pace to possibly be the best to ever play the game, why would you want to deal with that on a daily basis? Just seems odd to me because I've never heard of something like that before.

It's just another way to give him more money, as much as they possibly can without breaking the bank. Another example of how important the almighty dollar is in professional sports.

because that's essentially how the team makes their money when you get down to it.

I think the intention is to make Pujols essentially a modern day Stan Musial. It's a way to give Albert even more money and a way to keep him a Cardinal for life.

St. Louis is different in how they treat their players. When my uncle was released from them- and he was not exactly one of their all-time greats- he was immediately offered a job in their front office in marketing. If they'll do that for a relief pitcher with a blown out arm, offering one of the greatest players of all time a piece of the franchise is not all that surprising.

I'm not sure how involved he would be in day to day decisions and stuff like that. Like I said, it's a way to give him more money, more power, and a way to keep him involved in the frachise once he retires. For the time being, they just want him to play first base, hit home runs and put butts in the seat.

being a Cardinal is a little different that most clubs. They know Albert is a legendary player and want him to be the face of the Cardinals for years to come. Pujols is not just your normal everyday all star, he is a special player who is worth a ton to the Cardinals.

I realize that certain players are worth more than others, but at some point the kind of money they are handing out to folks to play professional sports gets quite ridiculous.

Ummm, no he wouldn't. Just because you're a shareholder doesn't mean you get to be involved, none less "have to be involved" with those kinds of decisions. Companies aren't run that way.
