Just wondering what anybody saw. I never saw a closeup of the ball after all the checking had taken place.

You are allowed to pickup your ball to identify it, providing your replace it precisely. A rules official can approve the replacement but I am not sure it's necessary. I think I might just google that to get a more descriptive ruling.

I believe the discussion was whether he was lying on top of an old, dirt-covered drain or sprinkler head. I thought he was sticking a tee in the ground to see if anything was buried. I was watching, and didn't see anything untoward.

You may be referring to 18. I never saw him touch the ball. He was checking the ground under the ball for a sprinkler. He never moved the ball from its resting place.

He and his caddy asked an official about the spot and they were both wondering if it was a sprinkler head (presumably so that they could get relief?). The rules official actually wasn't completely sure about the spot either so he is the one that told Simpson to push a tee into it to see if he could feel anything underneath. Simpson didn't move his ball at all. He just pushed a tee into the dead grass patch in front of the ball (there was a close up shot while he was doing this). Apparently he didn't feel anything and play resumed.
