The two years in which Missouri won the East overlapped with our 11-win run. They won the division in 2013 losing only one game in the conference, to us. We finished ranked #4 in the final AP poll that year and Mizzou finished ranked #5.
After 2008 Richt was mailing it in at UGA. He knew he could win 8 or 9 games on talent alone each season and that would keep the fans happy as long as he kept up the "good Christian man" thing. The loss to us in 2014 was one that he actually took personally and the fans really started grumbling about Richt's inexplicable losses. He paid Spurrier back in spades in 2015. That 2015 UGA game is probably what drove Spurrier to quit mid season.
Even the first loss to Auburn was a great game. I'd take 2010 over any recent season other than 2022.
Yeah 2022 sucked until Tennessee and Clemson, but those games changed the whole tenor of the season. That Tennessee win is arguably the best win in school history. It's definitely on the shortlist for consideration with 2010 Alabama and 2012 Georgia.
If we had beaten Tennessee in 2013 we'd have won the national championship. That team would have beaten Auburn and FSU. I remember debating that for hours one night with a good friend who happened to be Noles fan.
2012 Georgia should be the best win in my opinion. UGA was clearly the better team on paper and they looked totally inept. Spurrier made Richt look like a fool. UGA friends tell me that game was the game that turned a lot of UGA fans against Richt.
Yep, huge win. I think there are legit arguments for 2010 Bama, 2012 UGA, and 2022 UT. There's probably a few others from the past to throw into the mix, but those are the three that I saw live.
Isn't that sort of the whole premise of the chicken curse? We won't be terrible but we'll always fall a little short, like the loss to Navy in '84 took away the chance to realistically play for a national championship. 2013 Tennessee is sort of the same thing. Tennessee went 5-7 that season and the only SEC games they won were UK and us.
Yeah, that game against UGA was really the beginning of the end for Richt. Their loss to us in 2014 when he didn't give the ball to Gurley on our 4 really brought out the pitchforks. Most gamecock fans don't realize that while we view UGA as a big rival, probably #2 to Clemson, the vast majority of UGA fans view us about the same as they view UK, a pesky afterthought. They hated Spurrier but they didn't really hate USC. Losing to us while having superior talent made the UGA fans really question if Richt would ever get them over the hump.
Hell, Navy went 4-6-1 in 1984 and their starting running back was hurt when they played us.
The 2002 Arkansas team also made the SECCG with three losses. They also got drilled in Atlanta but not as disgracefully as we.
I don't know about winning the national championship. I do believe the Tennessee loss that year was easily the costliest of the SEC era - a complete lack of timely offense against a team we should have blown away.
