Wonder how much of a stadium you can build with $48M when $10M of it goes toward the land.

Ole Miss, MSU, LSU, Arkansas, and South Carolina are the programs in the SEC that draw the most for baseball.

Memphis would be a good location for 4 of those 5 fanbases, and South Carolina doesn't travel well to Hoover either.

Why not at least give Memphis a try for a year? If it works, you can try other places on occasion too and maybe start a rotation like the basketball tournament.

By the way, I found a site that calculates the geographic midpoint of places, and the geographic midpoint between Oxford, Starkville, Baton Rouge, and Fayetteville is somewhere between Clarksdale and Greenville, just a couple hours south of Memphis. If Jackson had a bigger stadium, it would be a great location too. Can you imagine if our 2005 SEC tourney title game had been in Jackson instead of Hoover? You might have been able to pack 25,000 fans into a stadium?

If you enter all 12 SEC locations in, the midpoint is actually very close to Birmingham, just north of Birmingham actually, if you were interested. I still wish the SEC offices would move to Atlanta, a city that's much more of a melting pot.

is the only reason why the SEC Baseball Tournament won't be moved. The SEC will come back with some BS about RV hook-ups, but it's really all politics.

For Jackson, or rather Pearl to host they are going to have to show that they can handle the tournament. The size of Trustmark Park is the biggest hang up, but there is plenty of space for temporary bleachers to be put in, or maybe even permanant seating in the future.

Having the C-USA baseball tournament in Pearl is the first step towards possibly ever having the SEC Tournament there. If they can show that they can handle that tournament well and have something to sell to the SEC, then they'll have a chance- of course it's a chance like Jim Carey in Dumb and Dumber.

There are a lot of good baseball stadiums in the south, but the only one that I can see the SEC Tournament going to besides Hoover is Memphis.

pays the SEC for what they would charge patrons for parking at the stadium. Some of the guys sitting around me who live in Hoover told me that, but they could have just been trying to make me feel better about getting stuck in traffic for 2 hours trying to get there for the Bama-Auburn opening game.

Birmingham is by far the most centrally located city in the SEC and the tournament has been wildly successful in Hoover. Trustmark couldn't even begin to aproach the average crowds at Regions even if it was sold out for every game. I think Memphis deserves to get the tournament for one year to see if it can draw as well, but there's no other city that would even have a chance (and I'd put Memphis's odds at no better than 50-50 at best).

in Hoover, but there's really no reason to hold it there every single year. It's not like Memphis, Atlanta, Nashville, and even New Orleans couldn't do just as well. The central location thing doesn't seem to affect basketball too much.

I agree that Trustmark wouldn't attract the crowds that Hoover would/will but that's why I also think it's good that they have the C-USA Tournament. If they ever get to the point where they could host the tournament- not likely, I know- at least they will have some experience with a major college baseball touranment, and C-USA is a major college baseball conference. It won't be like the SEC Tournament in terms of attendance, but at the same time I expect it to draw respectable crowds. The other thing is if Trustmark Park can't get to host the SEC Tournament, at least they will have a major college baseball tournament at the ballpark. So, really, it's a win/win for them unless they royally drop the ball on the C-USA Tournament.

For the time being, I hope the C-USA Tournament is something that the whole city of Jackson embraces, because it would be good for the city.

To be honest, in my opinion, I think Memphis would do the best job of hosting the SEC Tournament. It's an incredible stadium, it has a lot of seats in the shade- which is important in the south, it has a lot of amenities, they've played MLB exhibition games there before including the Civil Rights Game, and it's great for TV. There's also more to do in the area for fans in between games- Beale St. is a short walk from the stadium, so lots of restaurants and things like that.
