Did you like the offense that Brent Pease ran here?

I thought it was a pretty solid system that incorporated a lot of things I like into it. And curiously, I think that offense would fit quite nicely into Stoops' own philosophy, much more so than what we've been trying to run under Brown and Dawson. While elements of the Pease offense were definitely designed to spread you out and shred you, he also could readily throw a power running game at you, Heck, he even used a bit of I formation with a fullback at times and had other formations where he could put 2 or even 3 tight ends on the field if the situation favored it.

I'm not quite sure how you would classify the offense that Pease ran here during the Guy Morriss years. It wasn't the Air Raid of the Mumme years for sure, though it did have some similar concepts within it. Nor was it a conventional pro-style system, though it had elements of that too. And yet it wasn't overly complicated either. I guess the term that would best describe the 2001-2002 Pease offense would be a "power spread" , not all that different in design and intent to what Bobby Petrino likes to run.

How do you think an offense like that would work at UK now? It seems to me that if you want a balanced attack and a legit run game, then such an offense might just be what the doctor ordered. In 2002 UK was one LSU miracle last second play away from an 8-4 regular season record.

Here is the 2001 UK playbook that I found while browsing around the intrawebs if anyone wants to look it over:

Kind of a moot point discussing it considering that Stoops has made his mind that he wants to run a physical, balanced attack with a "Air Raid" scheme (which the Air Raid was never intended to be).

It's apparent that Stoops made his mind up long ago that schemes and coaching don't matter as much as talent on the field. While I agree with him (to a degree) he's having to learn the hard way that no matter how well he recruits, we're never going to be more talented than Georgia, Florida and Tennessee..if we're going to beat them it's because we're recruiting the "right" guys for the system that we're running, and we're developing those players the right way. Stoops has decided that players alone will do the trick and it's the reason that we're in the position we've found ourselves currently.

Besides LSU, team also should've beaten FL & South Carolina too. And they might've even beaten UT but they allegedly mailed it in.

His last year here most of the offensive players and JLO weren't happy with him.

I like the offense that has a good O line, good skill players, and consistent quarterback play. Any offense with those characteristics, I'll like it.....

I do recall some of the players being unhappy. But still, the end result was a winning season and an offense that moved the ball and scored quite a few points. I'd also be willing to bet that the guys who returned from that team to go 4-8 running Ron Hudson's screwed up offense the following season were even more unhappy.

Pease was here when JLO, Boone, Abney, Pinner went nuts...then when he left...JLO and Abney left behind had a bad year.

Pease went to Boise St and eventually put up great numbers there as well. THen Pease went with Muschamp at UF and things were not good in his short tenure.

I'd easily bring his scheme back to UK.....but the signs point to stoops wanting his air raid formation and trying to run tlhe ball, w/o QB being a threat on the ground. Looks completely weird to me...but Stoops is the coach.

It amazes me that so many want to recycle failed coaches.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we actually bring back Pease. I know I'm not. What we are suggesting is that an offense with similar concepts to what Pease ran here in 2001-2002 might work better given what Stoops wants the offense to do. If you want to play physical and be able to pound the ball while also being able to spread the field, then why not use a system built around that concept, rather than trying to make what is essentially a finesse offense into something it isn't?

Pease had a few good wrinkles but was a class A jerk from all reports. Believe JLO said he never liked the guy.
