Please be legitimate. This way when an opposing fan comes to the board and they ask, we can point him to this thread. Even include places to avoid.

Bulldog Deli - LINK

Sweet Peppers - LINK

McAllisters - LINK

Down the Hatch (Used to be Cotton District Deli) - It's in the BP gas station HERE. Highly recommended by me. Get a sandwich and some beer, take it back to the room, then hit the bars.

Finally went back there after pretty much only visiting campus for several years. You can get a toasted sandwich at several places, but there's just something about Oby's that puts it at the top of the list for me. Good gumbo, too.</p>

Like the Applebee's and the Chili's and what not. They are all pretty much garbage. You usually can't go wrong with a place on Main St. Umi's is a quality hibachi/sushi place on HWY 12.

edit: sorry, didn't mean to reply to your post UpTheMiddle

The best BBQ in Starkville is at Morris's (formerly Sonny's) on 16th Section Road. If you can use Google Maps, you will find it easily. It's kind of out in the sticks, but it only requires one left turn off the old Highway 82 to get there. I've always thought Starkville, not Tuscaloosa, has the best BBQ in the SEC. Don't get me wrong, Archibald's (in Northport outside T-town) has the best sauce on the planet, but you won't find a college town in the South with more variety when it comes to great barbecue.

Dooey's reputation speaks for itself. But they've slacked off big time over the last few years. It's still good stuff, but so is Petty's, Grumpy's, the BBQ Barn, and Christy's. All of these you can probably find on Google Maps if you'd like to eat somewhere in town. But if you're willing to drive three minutes outside the city limits, Morris's is hands down the best BBQ joint in the area. Plenty on the menu if the 'Cue ain't your thing too. Steaks, fish, etc...

My advice: order a BBQ sandwich plate with mild sauce and slaw on it, plus a side of fried okra and potato salad. It's incredible.

Really?
I mean, I realize that's your opinion.
An opinion lots would agree with. But it's not like we don't have other places that are as good.
Like the Veranda, for similar price range.
Or Harvey's, for a little less. Point being that nowhere in Starkville can claim to be the best hands down.

Re-opened after changing hands (not long after the old man died) and is now Morris's. It's basically Sonny's with a different name. Same great taste from that old shack pit. Steaks are featured on the menu as much as the BBQ now too.

Although it's a touch pricey, I have never left there feeling like I didn't get my money's worth. I can't say that about any other restaurant in Starkville (although I like both you mentioned).

Few more to throw out there:

Grumpy's
Cappe's
Umi's

Here's the thing. When you ask something like this you are going to have someone give a 10 star to just about every restaurant in town. There are a lot of morons that think McAlisters is a "can't miss" restaurant or that Rosie Babys has the best cajun food in the south.

You didn't ask, but what I would do is take everyones opinions, weed out the illogical and come up with something useful.

Otherwise you get a thread like this.

I'll take stuff from those visitor guide threads, type something up, save it as a .pdf, and send it to you. That way you can just pin the Officially Unofficial Guide to Starkville at the top for football season.

Hey man,
I have always been a huge fan of Sonny's / Morris's, and if you like local BBQ, you should make a 15 min drive out to Pheba (Mrs. Creesies? sp?) it is on the Eastern side of Pheba proper on a back street (open Fri / Sat some weekends) and to Larry Bells out at the county lake. He is located about 1/2 a mile to the East of the boat ramp at the Oktibbeha County Lake. Larry just sells BBQ and random stuff right off the pit. There are no accomodations, etc...there are no sides; just meat. I spoke to him about 6 months ago and he was on again off again with his cooking, economy was hurting his sales. But to me, his BBQ is the best and the sauce is really outstanding. Both of these places make Sonny's look fancy.

With respect to the food thread: Barristers is nothing fancy, but it is nice to have pretty good food with a great selection of beers (as best as you can hope to have in MS).

Mugshots is good. Bulldog Deli. Old Venice. Christy's. Petty's. Tipico. All very good.

Avoid Rosey Baby like the plague, of course.
