Direct TV, The Dish, or Comcast????

you will probably get banned for post like this around here. but, i hate dish network (who I am stuck with now for another 8 months) enough that i will gladly steer you away from them. service is horrible and they charge you for every little thing. no phone line? $5 per receiver per month. don't want HD anymore? $7 fee per month. Have an HD receiver? have to get one of the most expensive packages. and the list goes on.
I have DirecTV and love it. Picture quality second to none, and good customer service. I haven't had cable in years, but I hated it when I did.
I don't live in an area where i can get HD local channels over the air. And cable's the only one for me where I can get NBC, ABC, Fox, and CBS in HD.

(mostly because they are my ISP as well). After the second month, I decided that there really wasn't enough difference to make a difference. Cable (Cox) gives me 40 HD channels and pretty decent sports tier with NFL, NHL, NBA,Versus, and ironically all of the FoxSports Channels except Fox Sports South. It runs about $15 cheaper than a similar set up on DTV
anyway. I sat next to him on a plane, and he told me all about it. Somehow 1080i looks better for sports he claims.
But right now, watching Bluray is about the only way you'll be seeing 1080p. Though OnDemand may have some movies in it.

It's a technology thing, I think. There is actually no functional standard, Dish Network is promising it, but apparently the compression that they have to go through to stream it, renders it to be of the same quality as 1080i. Cnet says it will at least another three years.
