What exactly does the director of external operations do? If we are ever get some serious reform in college athletics the size of these football and basketball staffs need to be in play.

Don't know anything about this position and how critical it is.

But the frequent refrain is "the AD doesn't have the money to compete. We don't have the money to build the necessary facilities."
Well, like every other company - evaluate the department, prioritize expenses and initiatives, cut costs where available.
I doubt the Rutgers Athletic Department is the only department (in any company in the world) running at optimum efficiency.

You ever have a job posting in your company for a less than desirable grunt work type job? Junky stuff that needs to be done by someone that no one wants to do?

That’s what I’m reminded of when I read that JD.

But screw it lets save money and have Pike do that himself instead of worrying about keeping his roster together and playing 20 B1G games.

The post I replied to was looking at this in more general terms, all schools and teams, not just Rutgers. It seems that this position has real value. In general, you need to have these types of positions to provide an opportunity for future coaches to be developed.

Nice guy. Met him at a court club meeting at beginning of 21/22 season. He’s a Temple alum and I remember us chatting about Temple BB.
I remember Pike saying he was doing a lot of the analytics for the squad.
He originally came from Sacred Heart prior to joining Rutgers.
Given it’s probably a promotion, I hope Mike Sasso or Scott Scherer gets the now vacated role.

That sounds exactly like a job description for Director of Basketball Operations aka DOBO.

Basically, sounds like the assistant to the traveling secretary.

If so, I know a guy who had that job for the Yankees in the ‘90s.
