Do y'all remember this?

I was around when this decision was made. The east deck isn’t structural on the outside facade. It cannot support light stanchions. It was, indeed, a budget decision and we knew at the time that it was a permanent choice.

I just want to find the picture.
I can't find it online.. but it was a photo of Jackie and Templeton smiling while looking at an all white scale model of the stadium (maybe 2'x2') sitting on a table.

The east side was nearly identical to the existing west side. Then when it got built it's what we have today. Templeton sold it to the fans by claiming that it was really great because the back of the new upper deck fit right in with campus because it resembled an office building.

Just what everybody wanted... a football stadium that looks like an office building.

For whatever reason, they did go cheap with the lights. Which so what. The lights worked and did the job. And the position of the lights was not the problem with installing LEDs.

The biggest WTF was not building the club level another 3-4ft higher to avoid obstructed views from the lower east side. Instead State ripped out 4 rows of bleachers and put up a chain link fence.

With all that said, I'm sure if the money was there. LT would have done what was necessary. The dude was working with the smallest budget in the sec and cheapest smallest fan base. He is the longest running AD in Mississippi State history. He could have left for greener pastures, like an other couple of alumni ADs.

It will take MSU Athletics another generation to get past all the damage done in the Templeton years?

Nobody else in the Power 4/5 was hiring him.

The West side upper deck was supposed to have been full length handling 7K fans. It was shortened to what it is today, seating 5K due to project budget cuts. They should have just gone ahead with it as it's way more expensive to come back later and add the 2K to make it symmetrical to the East side.

The light standards were also a budget cut decision. They just decided to leave the 2 light standards where they were as it was much more expensive to adapt the East upper deck to be able to support light standards that would match the West side. It didn't effect lighting for tv productions so the old standards were left.

But the concessions area is heated and airconditioned.

I have a www.newspapers.com subscription. You turn clippings into a .jpg or .pdf file.

I found this when I was looking for the picture above - I guess this is what people did before messageboards...

“Templeton could have left for greener pastures…” ????
Really, you may be right, but I had no idea he was in demand to go anywhere or had attention from anyone.
Of course, I didn’t think cohen was in demand either, so

Looks like there were going to be more entrance ramps to the west side lower deck. Those didn't get built.

Symmetrical stadiums remind me of the soulless bowl multipurpose stadiums built in the 60s and 70s. All of them have pretty much been demolished by now. The coolest college football stadium I have ever been in is at Georgia Tech. That place is glorious. A stadium should have an individual character.

I vaguely remember the West side expansion. We had seats on the east side. I'd admire the progress with each home game and was fascinated State would have a football stadium that big.

If the internet and pod cast would have been around back then, some would have lost their minds. I recall lots of dirt and planks to walk on, to get into the stadium because of the construction.
