that it wasnt as big a deal anymore making it to the top of Mount Everest that even tourists were doing it now.
And I was attacked because only REAL men could climb Everest, and it was still an Iconic Heroic accomplishment to climb Mt. Everest

Well here you go....in a publicity stunt for the Olympics some people are going to carry the Olympic torch to the top of Mount Everest

Now I know thats its not the same thing as the someone slipping the Olympic committee a $100 to make sure the Olympic torch route passes by your snow cone outlett as it comes through Sumter S.C or wherever....but I think this further proves my point that climbing to the top of Mount Everest as lost some of its Iconic luster as a rare accomplishment.

because John Q. Public can drop $10K on a package with sherpas and guides.

Also (and not that I know, because I've never made it to the summit .. or the base camp for that matter), I refuse to believe that reaching the summit of Everest is any simple matter. It's not as prestigious as it used to be, but that doesn't make it easy by any stretch. BUT, I'm sure all you Reinhold Messners reading the board right now are ready to go summit with out supplemental oxygen.

You still gotta be relatively fit. Now for some geeky stats: If you climb everest you have a 25.2% chance of summiting and a 2.5% chance of dying. 2972 people have summited. The greatest accomplishment in mountaineering is Annapurna, only 130 people have summited and 53 have died....that means you almost have a better chance of dying than summiting. Just to deflect any stones: No I am not a climber. I just read the books. I would gladly lead an expedition for Polk and Hansbrough to the top of Everest though.

The article clearly says that a mountaineering team is carrying the torch and that the journalist won't be allowed.

You made it sound like a bunch of journalist and average joe's were carrying out this task.</p>
