Does anyone think we will ever hit "the next level?"

Not until we have consistent 8 win seasons and trips to big bowls. I don't know if even that would put us on the next level anyway.

because we had already had 3 straight winning seasons with a 7 win season in 97, a trip to the SECCG in 98, and a 10 win season in 99. Going into 2000 with Jackie at his pinnacle we were pretty much considered the next level. And even that year we got 8 wins with the Snow Bowl thrown in. Of course after that, well, we fell to the bottom like a boulder in a way that probably only MSU could.

in baseball.

MSU is at the "next level" already in:

1. Fistulated cows;
2. Equinox vehicles that run on alternative energy;
3. Bi-plane flyovers;
4. Cheese;
5. Brandishing hand guns on campus;
6. donning uniforms with variants of the shade 'maroon.'

...and you can all laugh if you want, but I think we will. Coach Croom is building a physically tough, mentally tough football TEAM! I think we will be challenging for the SEC West within the next two years, and will win the SEC within 4.

I mean, the odds are that at some point we will rise to that level. My problem with that is the eventual train wreck that will insue soon thereafter.

I posted this thought yesterday. But, it is the 1988's that really just crush my spirit. I think it is very realistic to expect those NEVER to happen.

Just my opinion, based on the recent history of college football and the fact that athletic budget means so much these days, I don't think either of our schools will ever reach that next level.

Yes, we can pull a Missouri or Kansas or a Northwestern and have a run of a couple of good seasons where we compete for conference titles. However, that's not going to be sustainable for the long haul.

Since 1963 (44 seasons now), the same 6 teams have won every SEC title. There is a reason for that. If you're trying to convince yourself that that's somehow going to change, and your program will all of a sudden join that echelon of teams and remain there for a significant period of time, you're dreaming.

In my opinion, the only way for one of our programs to truly rise up and join that group is if our enrollments significantly increase, our alumni base significantly increases, and our athletic budget conversely increases significantly. That would take at least 30 or so years, so I'm not holding my breath.

For me, I just hope to be competitive yearly and occasionaly have a run when things line up perfectly.

MSU has won less than 40% of it's games in the history of the program. I am a realist, not an eternal optimist.

Missouri, Kansas and Northwestern don't play in the SEC. Not saying we can't ever win an SEC title (we came within 5 minutes of winning one in 1998 and within 7 points of winning one in 1980 and y'all came real close in 1990), but it's a hell of a lot harder to win an SEC title than to win a Big 10 or Big 12 title.

......that the "next level" for MSU would be to actually have more winning seasons in a decade than losing ones. As it is we're lucky to see one winning seasone every 5-7 years. MAYBE we can get to that next level, but certainly not the one you're referring to.

In basketball? I doubt it. We're a consistent winner and we get to the NCAA tourney on a regular basis, so that's good for us. Unfortunately we can't keep a team together for more than one season, so we consistently lack continuity and we always fail to advance past the 2nd round in the NCAA tourney.

Baseball is our only shot to get to the level you're referring to. I think Cohen can do it, but it'll take time.

he always replies to the right message and the spelling is always right on. Also stays consistent in his beliefs, no flip flopping or sudden changes of style. Very underated poster

As far as football, first of all it's going to take commitment from the athletic dept. and the fans to do it. I think we have made some strides, especially getting rid of LT. Byrne is doing a great job at fundraising so far. But if you compare MSU football to the more successful schools in the SEC, we defnately have had some problems.

One important thing is making sure that we hire a competent HC, which is something that we have not always had. Croom is really the first HC in football that we have had that has a tangible plan for MSU football. The athletic dept. has been "OK" with too many 3-8 seasons, which drives fans away. Also, traditions have not been embraced like they should, although I think the Junction is a great step in the right direction. Before the Junction, our campus wasn't really all that tailgating friendly as in there wasn't a specific place to go that everyone hung out at. Also, in the past Starkville the town wasn't nearly as great a place to hang out and be in as it is now.

Also, there is very little pride in MSU football compared to other schools. I think that's one reason why we have seen so many players go out of state.

We're making strides, it's just that we're way behind most of the schools.
