All of the worst traits of the previous fired coaches in the last 25 years? The thing with Ekeler really makes me think its a personality conflict, and that White and likely Eck will have left because of it. The fact that Will Compton has been very quiet, and the dismissive nature of Rhule's comments speaks volumes. Rhule, in fact, seems to have some similar worst traits of my other failed coaches. Examples:

I'm rolling with my buddies, even if they suck. (Callahan, Frost)

Alpha Coaches who don't fit under my thumb should feel encouraged to leave. (Pelini)

So what if we only have a few recruits in this class. We'll hit the portal/JUCO ranks to make up the difference. (Solich)

Nice, hip, likeable. In tune with the youth of today. Call me Coach Matt (Riley)

Welp, we just recruited to shore up a gaping hole in a position group, but count on the dam to spring the same leak somewhere else next year. (Callahan)

There's 13:35 left in the 3rd quarter. Aw hell, lets burn a timeout. Maybe we'll try some onside kicks and get stoned on a 4th and one a few times, too. (Frost)

I only want to work with players and coaches that want to be here. If they leave, everyone's replaceable. Its not like some slot receiver or QB is gonna leave NU and end up in the NFL (Frost)

I'm gonna coachspeak the **** out of this interview. And if that doesn't work, I'll just dismiss you as someone who doesn't know half of the things I know about football. Its not like you're going to ask tough questions. You want to keep your press creds and sell subscriptions, amirite? (Callahan, Pelini, Frost)

The similarity that has me a little concerned right now - the 2008 recruiting class could’ve changed our program. Instead, Callahan held onto Cosgrove and that class dispersed like rats on a ship.

I read a lot of posters said we shouldn’t worry too much about Trae in 2027, because kids are going to change their minds, if he leaves not a huge deal, etc.

I’m not talking about just Trae but the entire class of ‘27 looks special so far. I could see Rhule following Callahan’s footsteps and getting booted right before a special class signs the dotted line. I know the transfer portal changes things a bit, but a special class is a foundational piece to becoming an elite program in my opinion. And that is one strong feature of Rhule right now, the ‘27 class.

I hope we can hold that class together and build it into a top 10 group.

Tonight, after my nightly rant that is always focused on the deterioration of Husker football, my wife, the Purdue grad, gave me the solution to our and my problem with mediocre coaches in general and Matt the Hat specifically. She says we Huskers are too nice. We go to all the games. We support the team no matter how badly they play. The Huskers must get good rating on TV because we all watch it. We wear team clothing even when we aren't watching a game. She said if people like me stopped supporting the football team, stopped spending money to go to games and quit watching them on TV the people in power back in Lincoln would act. Until we do that they will just carry on as if everyone is happy with the state of the football team.

Just like the magic of Year 3 I believe the class of 27 is a mirage. That is a awfully long ways out. How can anyone believe there will be no defections? Especially if the Huskers struggle next season. Let's see next December if this class is still intact.

Rhule will be here through 2027 season. So we should at least see that class here.

That’s what makes it hard. I can’t turn my back on the Huskers. It’s like leaving behind one of my Marines. Or leaving one of my kids in the backseat of the car in the middle of August. I just can’t do it.

Not enabling bad Husker football behavior is the same to you as killing your kid or leaving your friend to die? What an odd analogy.

100% right @Wasker73. And just like it was a mistake to put one player in Dylan Raiola above the overall best interest of the program, it would be a huge mistake to put one mythical distant class above the overall best interest of the program. Especially with the portal days we are living in now. Would be extremely short-sighted. Which probably means that's exactly what we'll do 😤

The sooner the fraud Matt Rhule is out of here the better. Ekeler is leaving probably because he hates Rhule. Remember last season when Rhule had to explain in his presser why he told Ekeler during the game not to bump into him again when he got excited after a big play? There was a real edge in his remarks. He kept saying how much he loved Ekeler but you could tell it was bullsh$t

I love you Pennsy. Because I said this same thing and many laughed and replied telling me I was looking into it too deep and Rhule LOVES Ekeler and Ekeler isn’t leaving.

I think it's 2 problems overall:
1. His rebuild plan no longer works in this NIL day and age
2. This job is too big for him (in part due to point #1)

Either way, his plan didn't work out, and he has no plan B (which was probably the Pen(is) St job). So now it's desperation time and everyone can smell it. Portal players, recruits, coaches (current & prospective). Next year will likely be brutal, which could duplicate itself again in 2027 if we lose more traction. I think there was optimism because the comparisons to recent coaching failures made Rhule look like an improvement.

Eckler must've hated a lot of coaches he's worked for.

Very possible. If 2026 is tough so will 2027 since it's the same conference schedule. My expectations have dropped immensely

I read once that he has tried to be the best ST coordinator in the game and put all his passion into that. If he has head coaching aspirations then he may be trying to get a DC job at some point - so maybe usc is offering more opportunity there from a defensive responsibility standpoint. If that’s the case - good on him. He’s obviously a guy whose family is cool moving he’s had like 12 jobs in 14-15 years. I don’t like seeing him go but also we should have expected it at some point. Maybe he’s trying to live in every state to see the country - an admirable goal.

It's just funny to me when people say things like, "Eckler must hate Rhule, that's why he's leaving."

Never mind that Eckler has been to 13 different programs over 24 years.

You're right. Everyone should just keep doing what we KNOW hasn't worked for 20 plus years. Much better plan than trying something that MIGHT not work. Perfectly sane approach.
Where were you leading up to the 2018 and 2023 seasons calling for these boycotts?

Imo every coach since TO have greatly underestimated what it takes to be successful at nebraska they come in and are overwhelmed because of the complexity our unique culture. And I’ll include Rhule and all of them have hired subpar assistants

My dad getting transferred by the company he worked for resulted in me going to 5 different school districts (my younger brother went to 6). It wasn’t always fun.

Had a discussion with my old man about this, and I had to tell him our fanbase needs to stop being nice. It's gotten to a point where ear candy isn't working anymore, sadly it took our fanbase 3 coaches to finally see just how rotten to the core our football program is. The whole "Nebraska Nice" ******** needs to die.

Well, Ek in a lot of ways embodies Bo but he doesn’t have to deal with the media when his returner sticks us inside the 20 multiple times. I’m guessing behind the scenes he’s abrasive.

Another thread trashing Rhule. Yeah. We’re too nice. That’s our problem. If Ek is unhappy, which he apparently is, he needs to leave. He’s making at least 650K in the state he was raised in. Most Drs don’t make 650K. No doubt he wants to make the most of any SC in the country.
