Does this give you hope that State can win...

At least 3 Jackie Sherrill teams were on par with national championship teams. It takes some good fortune for just about any team to win a national championship and we just haven't quite gotten there yet.

could not win when it mattered most. We did in '98 because of a gutsy W Madkin performance and a clutch FG by Westerfield but we should have won the West in '97, a phantom block in the back at uat in '99 (imagine that) and also in '00 --we beat both teams that played in the SEC Championship but we could not close the deal to end the yr.
Mullen will take us closer than we have been since but he is young and will follow the money when it comes calling.

It would have to be a perfect storm type of situation for us.

For us, it would take us having a good HC, OC and DC and on top of that we would have to have a guy who is a special type of player at QB and or RB, and be at least solid on the o-line, the skill positions, defense, and ST's.

We would have to have four very winnable non-conference games and not La Tech them, of course a good coach wouldn't do that.

I think it would most likely have to be a year where we have Ole Miss, Bama, and LSU at home and we beat them, we play Vandy and UK and beat them, and then upset Auburn and be flat out better then Arkansas- ie they don't have McFadden or Mallet to tear us a new one and win the game for them- and then maybe we catch a Florida, Georgia, or UT on the downswing. We could still afford a loss to one of the big name SEC East teams and or Auburn and still go to the SEC Champ game, and MAYBE one other loss depending on how everything else in the SEC shakes out.

That scenario would leave us at 11-1 or 10-2 at worst and would get us to the SEC Championship Game. Now, if we pulled off an upset, which we can forget about if our opponent is undefeated, we MIGHT actually end up in the BCS Championship Game depending on what happens around the rest of the country. If say, USC and Texas are both undefeated, we can forget it. Even at one loss with a SEC Championship, if there are a bunch of "name" teams with one loss, we won't go. If there are a bunch of two loss teams, we would go. Most likely, win or lose, we go to the Sugar, and that ain't bad. Which is why I titled my post as such.

So there you go. I now know what it feels like to be Rosebowl. BUT as I said, it would have to be a perfect storm, and it's highly unlikely. The closest we've come to my scenario was 1980- lost to USM and Forida and 1999- lost to Bama and Arkansas. In 1998 we probably would have played Texas A&M in the Sugar had we upset UT with three losses. But essentially, we're talking about a once every 20 years or so type of situation.

I believe we have a young offensive guru who is aggressive for our HC.We also have alot of players that really nobody else wanted. Our history is pretty similar to the Saints. Why can't it happen for us too.I beleieve we have the coaches now to take our team to that level in 3 or 4 more yrs.If we can make a bowl game this year and play competitive against top ranked teams.I believe we will have a great recruiting class next year and as long as each year we keep improving then 4 yrs from now we could be a championship football team.

meaning a probowl caliber QB like Brees can go to a team like the Saints. It would take lightning in bottle for State to win a BCS championship -- going undefeated in the SEC.

get to initially choose their team. and when they do get to choose their team, they usually don't care about tradition.

Alabama, Auburn and LSU were all down in the West. Our competition for the division was essentially Arkansas. If you are State, all you can ask for is an opportunity for one game - we had that against Tennessee and with 6:00 to go in the game, I thought we were going to the freaking Sugar Bowl.

'99- our team may have been better, but Alabama was up. In 2000, it was Auburn.

I hate to say it, but as long as Saban is in Tuscaloosa, the West goes through there.

We also had a perfect situation in 2004 to make a run in the NCAAs. We were the top 2 seed in that tournament- Duke was the lowest 1 seed and they were in our bracket. The 3-seed was an 8-loss Texas team and the 6 seed was a 10-loss North Carolina team. I thought we had a shot at the Final Four. Other 1 seeds were Kentucky, Stanford and an overrated St. Joseph's team.

Duke was the only 1 seed to make the Final Four that year.

At least baseball has a playoff tournament that allows 8 teams to have a great shot at it. as stated already in the thread, in football we would have to first go undefeated, second play 4 quality OOC teams, and third actually get selected in the final game instead of win our way into it. if there were multiple undefeated teams with winning tradition who also went undefeated then we could easily not be selected (example: texas, oklahoma, USC, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State, etc.). if it happened where two of those teams from different conferences were also undefeated i could see us get the shaft.

Think about the teams in the NFL that are absolute hot garbage right now. Not too long ago some of those teams were in the playoffs (okay, the Lions are clearly a special case). The thought of teams like the Saints and Chargers being playoff teams was laughable earlier in the decade, but due to the NFL's socialism revenue sharing and salary cap, pretty much any team is a few years away from the playoffs (or a brief trip to the basement). Now take the SEC. You can basically pick how the league is going to shake down every year. A Bucs-Chiefs Super Bowl is way more likely to happen than a MSU-UK SEC Championship Game. Now could it happen, sure. But am I any more likely to think it will because a historically "bad" franchise won the Super Bowl? No.

edit: you said "in something" well yeah, sure we can (baseball).

The same 6 teams havewon the SEC title every year since 1963 (except for Kentucky sharing one title in the 1970s). In the NFL, every franchise but 4 has at least played in the Super Bowl, and 2 of those 4 weren't in existance until 1995 and 1999 (I know that technically, the new Cleveland Browns are considered to be the same franchise as the old Cleveland Browns, but the reality is that the old Cleveland Browns moved to Baltimore).

But other than Disc Golf, I would say our odds are best in Baseball, then basketball, then way down the line, football. Baseball we have the tradition and location to compete in. Basketball, a top 15 team can catch fire in the tournament, and also, one special player goes a lot further in basketball than football.

In football, first you have to have a team loaded with talent. Not going to happen at MSU too often. Then you have to have good coaching. Then you have to catch breaks, avoid injuries, etc;and in half the years (maybe more), State probably would need to go undefeated, b/c a 1 loss USC, Texas, Nebraska, Michiganetc. is going to be chosen over a 1 loss MSU.

How quickly we forget our 1941 national championship. I remember it like it was yesterday . . .
