He has not gotten 18 wins twice in his head coaching career. Once in his second season and the year after we lost all five starters and some backups. With the National Defensive player of the year anchoring this team, I think that we should at least win 18- 20 games with an outside chance at the NCAA but likely NIT bid.

that I honestly thought we could but from what I am hearing internally we won't.

I think the SEC being "down" again this year will help our chances to get to 18 but I see us getting 16 maybe 17 and making the NIT.

I understand Stan's record shows that we most likely will win 18 games this year but I don't think Stans has ever faced the challenge he does this year. That challenge being the fact that we don't have a guy who we can trust TODAY to be there for us scoring the clutch points at the end of the game.

I like the fact that we have more of a "team" this year but I see us stumbling hard when we get to SEC play.

I like Stans, always have, and once again.......I would love to be wrong..........

have role players plus 1 or 2 great players (aka Derrick Rose type) since i don't think we have an offensive talent like that we could win with defense. If Vanardo can play at the same level or higher than last year and we rebound well i think we will be fine defensively. We still need that zone buster to step up if that happens we could well make the NCAA as a 7-10 seed. Stansbury continues to impress me with the unknown talent he brings in and if could make it further in the ncaa i would give him his dues.

that won't happen. This team will be above average but you have to be a good to great team to get to 20 wins.

If no one transfers off this team, don't hold your breath, this team could be VERY good in the future but I don't think it will be this year.

We've never been a good 3-point shooting team. So any rule that will reduce 3-point shots (both made and attempted) should help us.

I really thought MSU would be a bubble team, same with most of the SEC WEST.

I still think MSU gets to at least 18 wins.

Let's see you break down the schedule.......20 wins may not happen but it is very possible this year

You're nuts if you think 20 wins is out of the question. Admittedly, I'm a big Stans fan and some might say apologist, but look at his track record, the talent on this team, and the mediocrity of the SEC West. We have a fairly easy non-conference schedule, and this team plays together much better than last year's team did. Bost will be special and will give Jarvis and our bigs many easy looks as long as they run the floor. This team is going to surprise a lot of people I think. We'll be in the 18-20 win range and be on the bubble for an NCAA birth. NIT is more likely, but NCAA isn't out of the question this year.

you're basing this on a scrimmage and an exhibition? I think I'll wait and see how they do against actual teams.

I just can't see it. We have no returning scorers, no known 3 point threats, and question marks at the 1, 2, 3, & 4. The only known coming into this season is Varnado is a great defender. Where is our offense going to come from? Which Stewart will show up, Randy or Barry, and will he find his 3 point stroke again? Will Dee Bost live up to the hype?

I'm already a pessimist, but football has really made me doubt all things MSU until shown different.

Ahhh, October, when the 2nd coming of State's 1996 team is warming up for the new season.

We lost all of our scoring from last year. This will be a rebuilding year.

Schedule -

I will just break down the SEC schedule since it is hard/impossible to predict how many wins we could pull out of the tournaments we are playing.

at Arkansas - L
Alabama - L <----------Toss Up
Vanderbilt - L
at LSU - L
at Georgia - L
Ole Miss - W
at Kentucky - L
Arkansas - W
LSU - W
at Auburn - W
South Carolina - L
at Alabama - L
at Tennessee - L
Auburn - W
Florida - L
at Ole Miss - L

So there it is our SEC record is 5-10.

When Stans went 15-15 in 2005 he had more talent than he does this year.

aGAIN I hope I am really wrong on this.......

I think we will have a slow start and win a few on the road..

Next year will be the first of several NCAA years.

I think we get there easily. We now have a true PG that shares the ball. The young guys looked great. Jarvis will score more. If we can find some outside threats, we'll be ok. I think we'll be on the bubble at years end, and who knows if we'll actually make it in the tourney

Yes, I believe they can/will achieve 18 wins. True, Stan's team three years ago may have had more talent, but he had no returning starters. I believe the starting lineup was
Gordon, Edmonson, Rhodes, Slater, (Tall white guy who sucked, name does not come to mind), and work in the delk sisters and you have a par team with no returning starters and very little bench depth

This year
Bost, Johnson, Stewart, Varnado and Johnson with a very deep bench in Augustus, Bailey, Holcombe, Beckham, and Osby
Bost will be the key link with no playing time. The two johnson's at least got decent playing time last year up until the tourney.

apparently you havent been paying attention over the last 5 or so years to see just how many teams make 20 wins. its gotten absurd, especially since the early season tournaments where teams play 4 games that only actually count as 1 game against their schedule.

But I think I will wait until I see a couple of games against decent opponents in the non conference season before I would definitely say they have 18 wins in them. They are a talented bunch but very young and you really don't know how well they will respond to some of the tough matchups they have on the schedule. No matter how they finish I think they will be fun to watch and competitive. Which is more than you can say for our football team.

...than last season. Last year we had a BEAST down low in Charles Rhodes, and a BEAST out front in Jamont Gordon, and they were the total focus of our offense. We came down the court and Jamont would work the ball into Charles, or take the shot. When time started to get low, they would pass out the ball to either Ben or Barry in hopes of a 3. That severely limited our offense. We averaged 13.2 assists per game, which is very low. Good passing teams average closer to 18. I hope to see this one average over 15.

This year, we have a true point guard, who can run the team in the half court and also score when necessary. At this point, he has done his best to keep the ball moving. By season's end, he should be able to reduce his turnovers to less than 2.5 per game and have an assist to turnover ratio close to 2:1. He will be a better defender, especially for smaller quicker PG's. We should also have better perimeter shooters. Our defenders will be longer, quicker and faster. I think we will have a defense that should be Top 10 in the country. If we can find a #4 player who can rebound well and score 10 ppg, we should be the best inside/outside team in the SEC West.

The SEC West is down somewhat this year. LSU has the best overall talent and a new coach who knows how to use it. They are still searching for a point guard. If they find one, they will be tough. Alabama is searching for strong post players. JaMychal Green is a great talent, but is not a refined post man yet. If Ronald Steele is back to sophomore form, they will also be a tough out. I think they will be the two principle threats. Ole Miss has a good perimeter team, but lost all it's beef, including scoring and rebounding, down low. If they can find a couple of good rebounders and post players who can set picks and score a little, they may challenge. Malcolm White can score and rebound, but can he play defense?

If we can find a big man to complement Jarvis Varnado, we will have the best inside/outside offense in the West. Brian Johnson has the skill and intelligence, but is still not totally back from his knee surgeries. He needs a lot of backup. He is probably only good for 20 minutes per game. Kodi Augustus has the offensive skills, but needs more intensity on defense. Elgin Bailey has the intensity and athletic skills, but picks up easy fouls and primarily plays the 5. Romero Osby is picking up the speed and intensity of college basketball, but he is not 6-8 230. He looks closer to 6-7 225. His overall skills are close to guard level, but he just needs experience right now. He would probably be ideal as the #4 "going small."

We seem to have depth both on the perimeter and in the post, but no one has stepped out and claimed Charles Rhodes role as the emotional leader on the floor. I think it is too premature to either say we will have a very good team, or a rebuilding team. Stans seems to think we can compete, but it may be midseason before things jell. Greg Ellis thinks we can win the West. I am cautiously optimistic.

not to mention, even ESPN had Deuce as the number one pick in the NFL draft before his senior year. Not quite the same situation.

Better than the 6'4" 230lb Jamont Gordon?

I heard the college basketball guru for Rivals (Andrew something) talking about Jamont the other day on the radio. He said every SEC coach he talked to hated trying to match up with the guy both offensively and defensively.

Since when has Stansbury ever had a point guard with less than 2.5 turnovers a game. Two things you can count on from a Stansbury team - tough defense and plenty of balls in the first two rows.
