Doesn't it feel good to pitch in....

We are apart of this great conference known as the SEC, and for many years we have pounded our chest and benifited from that. However, very rarely have we actually been the reason why the SEC is awesome. The times that come to mind are: 96 Final Four and destroying Michigan in the Gator Bowl. However, those times we were apart of the SEC's greatness, not the sole reason why and banner carrier.

This time, we are carrying the banner for the greatest conference on the planet. We aren't thanking Bama for the television dollars, we aren't chanting SEC SEC when LSU destroys a non-conference opponent in football, we aren't feeling good about ourselves when Kentucky wins the basketball championship because we feel like we have an affiliation with them and by them winning it somehow validates us.

No, this is all about MSU, this is MSU pulling its own weight in this great conference, something other SEC .

If we manage to win this thing, I hope our fans don't chant "S-E-C."

Literally 30 seconds after beating Virginia, our team was dog-piling on the field and our fans at the game were chanting that. I didn't understand that, and it pissed me off.

This isn't about the SEC....it's about Mississippi State. Other than that, sometimes it seems to me that we may have some of the dumbest fans in the conference.

This conference treats us like the red headed step child.

How many other schools in this conference have a rule in the books that was directly targeted at them? I have never been one to get behind the whole SEC pride thing.

I agree totally. We are treated like the red headed step child and we don't need to be hollering SEC, SEC.

BINGO. +1. No conference pride here when no other school has had our back in anything before. We've been targeted for rules and regulations and, arguably, held back in a lot of ways by the conference.

Let's run down a list of things here to be pissed about:
1. The whole rented mule saga was turned back towards us while a blind eye was cast toward the school he actually went to
2. XenaReb in ProbationGate
3. Cowbells
4. The article in the Alabama paper prior to the 2006 Bama game (which we won)
5. The Outback boycott
6. Even here... the countless times we've been shown no respect for getting where we are... Vandy and LSU should be here... not lowly MSU

There are countless more examples of times where the conference treats us like the the weird kid you really don't want to be associated with... but you have to be because you're in the same conference as them. Instead of chanting "SEC..." a name that has worked to keep us under the rug... chant the name of the school that has longed and deserved to be on this stage for a long time.

Only time we need to be chanting SEC is if we are celebrating winning the SEC.

This. I can think of only twice when S-E-C chant was appropriate (for games I was present at - but they illustrate my point).

State just beat Alabama in a tight basketball game at Bama to take the regular season conference title.

Gatorbowl I, after scores were announced that the SEC was destroying the BIG10 teams by several touchdowns in each of three New Year's Day games.

Couldn't disagree more. MSU pulling its own weight? Think again. We get MILLIONS of dollars from the SEC. It's a huge chunk of our whole AD budget. We get a chunk of the Big Boys money every time they win a major bowl. We get SEC TV revenues. Without that what do you think MSU TV revenues would be? Without SEC revenues we are USM. Hate to say it there is no money in baseball and this ain't exactly paying back our share. Not even close. Want to not be treated like a stepchild-- win in football. In the meantime be glad your step daddy is doing the heavy lifting for you. So let me hear it--"SEC! SEC! SEC!"

Held back by the SEC? Yeah ok.

The SEC has 9 NC in baseball and hopefully MSU will make it 10. Everyone judges and ranks the confrences and which one they think is the best. When a SEC team wins something as large as a NC it stands out to the opposition that our teams stick together. They remember it and we all take pride in our conference having won 7 in a row in football. I'll be more than happy to chant SEC SEC SEC if it means we won a National Championship. Let the other 13 schools feel a little pride too. Their tough competition helped MSU achieve success. No way MSU pulls this off without those schools forcing us to stay on top of our game.

Couldn't agree more

(also I think you're agreeing with the poster you are responding to - who you claim to disagree with)

As much as some people ***** about being a low man on the SEC totem pole, truth is, we would be completely 17d without the SEC. I think we'd be even worse than the Iowa State level without the SEC, more like Arkansas State.

I disagree. We are lucky to be in the SEC and for all the **** we take, we benefit much more. Without the conference, we'd be Iowa State. It is great to contribute and I can't wait to hear the SEC chants.

I agree, you people complaining, need to think about that $30 million check we get every year from the SEC for basically doing nothing but existing. Thats why I am so proud to be able to pitch in. There is nothing more prideful than for a young man to pay for his parents dinner after he has his first job. There is nothing more prideful than knowing that you aren't mooching off of others success, and that you are the one being successful. We have been moochers for a long long times, and OM still is because they haven't down **** on the field. We are pulling our weight with this CWS and I am proud of that.

We are a charter member. We helped start this conference decades ago and have participated in its progression ever since. Without the sec Alabama would be Troy state, Florida would be Florida gulf coast, lsu would be university of Louisiana Lafayette, Tennessee would be middle Tennessee state. We are not lucky to be in the sec we helped start the damn thing and decided to stay in it and build it when others left. I think tulane and Georgia tech left the conference somewhere along the way. Go apologize for someone else you stupid *** ignorant arrogant ********. We have a lot of blood and sweat equity built up in this conference and we owe no one any apologies. Being a charter member means only MSU can opt MSU out of this conference, ever. It's in the by laws.

Screwing us? Where would we be without the SEC? If we weren't a legacy team they'd dump us. And maybe, just maybe we could join Conference USA

We made Alabama?? You're a delusional idiot. With their market any conference would take Florida and LSU. Who would take us? Only we can opt ourselves out but given a choice do you think they would keep us? Get real! Yor argument is they are stuck with us???

Very well said. I've been thinking along these lines. I am proud for MSU to represent the SEC. It feels great to know that LSU, Vandy, Arkansas, Alabama, etc. and even Ole Miss have our back.

And it feels great to be a reason the SEC is awesome instead of riding its coat tails.

+1 for pro SEC

Even though we have had our troubles
with being the "red headed step child". I boast more about what we as MSU have accomplished this season. But if you can't admit that it's nice to carry the entire weight of the SEC on our shoulders, you need to rationalize the situation. Our boys and coaches got us here. I agree with that and applaud our team. BUT we still are the poster child of the SEC in the process! Recognize that and be proud of it. This will pay dividends boys.

So you are saying, basically, that any school not named LSU, Bummah, Florida, Georgia (I guess), and now maybe you can throw TAMU in that category is not "pulling their weight"? Because by your definition if you don't win in football, you aren't ****. Yeah, those schools are the elites, but hell, that is five out of fourteen. 35.7%. The same goes for every other f ucking conference out there. You feel like we owe the SEC something? F uck that noise. The only thing they have done for us is kept us from wearing those 1984 Houston Astros throwback specials. Have some pride for your school.

My argument is that since we have been here from the beginning we deserve to reap the benefits now. All of the schools in the conference benefit from being members. All schools can't be the same size or have the same level of success or generate the same amount of cash but even the bigger schools benefit from our existence in this conference. It is a waste to try to diminish the school you love when the reality is we have participated in and have contributed to this conference since the day it was created.
