Counterintuitively I think it can sometimes be difficult for great athletes to coach someone at the same position they played: when you're really great the game might just come to you more intuitively than it might a lesser player and/or you may not know how to coach a player with less talent who simply can’t do all of the things you did (or at least not as easily).Sha has done a terrible job with point guards. He actually does better job with bigs than point guards. Insane for a former point guard.
I’m reminded of (the probably apocryphal story about) some advice given by Stan Musial to a young Curt Flood: “ "You wait for a strike, then you knock the **** out of it."”
Perhaps the approach the Stan Musials of the world can take. Not so much for us mere mortals.
