There was a Washington Post article talking about the unusual position Klinsmann is in...

Do Americans want to blow their load on sending out an old man at the cost of taking away experience from an 18 year old who is likely going to be the face of American soccer for the next 15 years? It sucks. But it's business.

The dilemma is deeper than this. Does Klinsmann think that Donavon on the bench is enough to get the team out of group play? If not, then might as well play for 2018. But taking away (limited) experience from an 18 year-old shouldn't keep the 18 year-old from being the face of American soccer for the next 15 years if he's playing in Europe and that darn talented.

I like Klinnsman, but I don't like this decision. He really put his *** on the line and I hope it works out.

I suspect some (or all) of the younger dual nationality players who made the team were promised a roster spot if they committed to the USA. I still think room should have been made for Donovan.

He can win headers and tackles, and defend one on one, but he cannot distribute the ball and I'd be scared to death to see him try to play out of the back against pressure. I assume that the idea is for Michael Bradley to start deep and connect the defense to the attack, picking up the slack for Jones. I do understand wanting his athleticism over someone like Beckerman, who is a much more technically skilled player, but is slow and you'd be concerned if he faced off against some one like Joao Moutihno.
