Downtown Shuttles

The past few years we have parked downtown and got on the shuttle at the newspaper parking lot. Saturday we learned, along with a thousand others, that there is no pickup from the newspaper parking lot anymore. We learned this when after an hour of waiting there was no pickup. Instead, there are 2 small trolley buses for downtown in front of Regions. Which is not nearly enough, as evidenced in the line that stretched for 3 blocks around the bank and down the side lot of Reed's. If you wondered about the steady stream of folks walking in the rain through the Cotton District, it's because hundreds of fans WALKED to the stadium from Regions bank downtown.

When was this changed, and why on earth would they not publicize the changes? Surely we can do better than this, MSU......

Apparently the shuttle buses are being replaced with the SMART trolleys.....

which weren't NEARLY enough Saturday. And people lined up at the newspaper parking lot all afternoon waiting.......it was really frustrating, and I'm fortunate to be healthy. Felt really bad for lots of older folks who were counting on the ride. The line was just way too long and 2 little trolley buses could not keep up.

I saw SMART running over the weekend. Is that what you're referring to?

It seems

a few busses were out of operation, due to mechanical problems.

I would suggest keeping up with MSU Gameday Ops on Twitter, for future reference. They're pretty good at communicating and responding to questions.

I got to say the experience of the downtown shuttle sucked big time! Why fans weren't informed whenever SMART took over, it should have been announced. I parked at City Hall and walked to DWS, no big deal for me but I felt really sorry for the folks who had elders and kids with them! Worse was after the game and waiting over an hour and a half for two shuttles.

Bad communication by the administration, but it was the first game! Oh, hitch hiking from downtown didn't work either, I tried but I suppose having Msu gear must have scared off everybody.

Scott must have consulted with LT on this.....sounds like a typical LT move to me. If it inconveniences the fans.....DO IT. We have more important things to do than try to accommodate fans.

I always parked at city hall and caught the shuttle there on the rare occassions I get to go to a game. Are you saying that this route is completely gone now or just for this one week? That is a BS move if they killed the shuttle service. When I go I usually tried to take at least one of my kids if I got more than one ticket. No way they could make a walk like that.

It was really bad. It was great last year.

Saturday I pulled in to the SDN parking lot like normal and began to wait with about 25 others for the bus. No one came, so after about 30 minutes we walked up and joined the line by Reeds. We didn't see a bus for another 30, and the line was about a half mile long so we started walking.

So I walked from there to campus and was never once passed by a shuttle.

I ask this

bc I just do not know (not being a smartass), but is this a move that Scott is in charge of? That is, replacing the old busses with the new ones? I would think that is a move the school made, unrelated to the AD. Again, I have no idea.

Yes on City Hall, construction in front of the hall, also I was told no picking up at SDN either. In the past it was two stops, City Hall and SDN, Saturday after the game it was 5 stops. Also bus was way over crowded, when I finally got on there were about 10 college students already on the bus, I ask how did they get on? They stood in the middle of the street when bus was coming to the architect building and made the bus stop and got on.

I'm sure the whole athletic department was aware of the situation before Saturday, but hopefully this situation will be solved quickly. I also think more folks are taking the shuttle, but two damn shuttle buses downtown is about 4 short!

Has nothing to do with Scott or the Athletic Dept. but the university and Starkville decided on the trolleys

I've ridden the shuttles before too. It's usually a pretty good wait and can be a long line. Hate to state the obvious, but with the expansion in seating at DWS, the demand for the shuttle is only going to grow. Combine that with the ever increasing tailgate restrictions, and the ridership could have easily jumped 3,000-5,000 people this week. It also appears that the post-game traffic was a bit snarled. The more people you park remotely who shuttle in, the better that situation will get.

It was more than just 5k more people and traffic problems. It was a huge 17up by whoever is in charge. I have been parking there for years without issue. I parked at the newpaper at 3:50 and did not get to my seat until the first quarter was half over.

In previous years they had multiple large buses and 2 stops. The newspaper and the courthouse. This year they had 2 small trolleys and at least 4 stops. this meant the trolleys filled up at the first stops and were full before they made it to the others.

After waiting at the newspaper for a while someone told us they were not picking up there, but they were at the Regions one block over. I waited at Regions, along with many others for over an 1.5 hours without a SINGLE trolley stopping. My wife and small kids eventually left and drove back home while I stayed to ride with my brother. With my small kids gone we decided to walk and that is when we found out they trolleys were filling up at the other stops

None of the gameday or hailstate ops twitter account told of the changes or of the extra wait. If you called the 1-800 gameday number all they would tell you is that buses were in route.

To make matters worse you had an empty full size buse passing by that said they could not pick us up because it route was to wal-mart. So it just drove around empty. Same thing after the game, you had a full size bus with driver just parked by the downtown pick up stop setting empty.

This could have and should have been avoided. They have been doing the shuttles for a few years now, this had nothing to do with buses out of service. This was just a contract change to go from several full size buses to 2 small trolleys and adding pickup stops, which considering the volume of users in previous years and the additional 5k in the stadium, was complete stupidity

Changes coming for Saturday

I spoke with Brent Frey at Game Operations today. He said that the S.M.A.R.T. route trolleys that ran (or didn't) last Saturday will run as usual this Saturday. BUT the Athletic Department will run the larger buses from prior years to and from SDN parking lot, beginning at 10 a.m. There will be no pickup/dropoff at the new courthouse due to the City Hall construction mess.

He said the S.M.A.R.T. trolley line, operated by Starkville development whatever, offered to run the Downtown Shuttle route this year because they have grant money to operate it on Saturdays too (thanks, Obama!). They just didn't make adjustments for more people. And, I added, they didn't adjust the route to account for game-day traffic either.

My other shuttle experiences are here in Auburn. Granted, it's a total crowd of probably 30,000 more, but they do shuttles all over the place. I usually ride from the mall, which is about five miles from campus. They also have them at TIgertown in Opelika, which is a little further out, and other locations around town. I know we have routes at several places, but more of them a little further out might help. Good problem to have though. If you build it....

Aren't we an engineering School? Why doesn't the Engineering School let our students figure out a plan to move Fans rapidly in and out of Campus? because whomever is in charge of that planning is a Dumbass and the people they use to execute their plan are rude and stupid. We have a new 75 million addition and a 25 cent plan to get people in and out of the ballgame.
