GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Last Friday's Dudley Panthers vs. Davie War Eagles High School Football game had more than just your regular highlights.

In the second quarter with the Dudley High School Panthers in scoring position, quarterback Hendon Hooker ran the ball on first down. After Hooker was tackled on about the 5-yard line the referees threw the yellow flag.

The refs gave Hooker an unsportsmanlike penalty for throwing a punch.

He was ejected and will be suspended for one game for the penalty per NCHSAA rules.

The Dudley Panthers are in the process of appealing the call.

Absolutely ridiculous call. not ONE punch thrown. the only contact that might have been made was with his own teammate! and gets ejected and suspended for that?? absolutely terrible! Hooker is a great kid and doesn't deserve a suspension at all. Hopefully the nchsaa will do what's right and over turn that call and let the kid play. He already missed a good portion of a game. now your making him miss another because of that? I see why there are a lot of frustrated people in the Dudley community for that call. Ive seen MUCH worse go on in a game and not even get a flag! The refs should be ashamed for that!

There must of been not enough omelettes thrown in that game. It looked like to me like he was saying "Hey get out of my way I'm trying to get up"

C'MON man let the kid play

I just looked at it. He is pushing his own teammates hand away as he is reaching to help him up. Why....who knows...maybe he thought it was a defenders hand but still no punch.

Quicker and and decisive ruling by the NCHSAA. Maybe under new management the organization has advanced.
They've now decided to use MaxPreps rankings to help seed the playoffs.

Well, that pretty much debunks the organization has advanced theory.

I only saw the video on the TV (Fox 8, I think)....anyway, definitely doesn't look like he did anything wrong. I think the NCHSAA did the right thing from an ethical point of view, but wonder if this opens up a legal can of worms (sets a precedent). Will everyone get the chance to appeal with video for an ejection? Maybe that's already in place where you can appeal something like that and submit evidence that supports a reversal. Regardless, glad the young man gets to play since he didn't appear to do anything wrong. I think we've all seen a lot worse that didn't get called.....

That was the most ridiculous thing I've seen in a long time. Every single referee on that field that night should be suspended a game. No way in hell can you interpret that as a punch. Unbelievable.

If every single referee on the field was supposed to be looking at that play, you might have a point. But they all have different zones to cover, so there should never be more than one or two officials zeroing in on the ball.
