This should not be allowed. Including walk ons, there are 100 players maybe 105. Game day dress outs are obviously less than that. You have 0 or 00 through 99. There are plenty of numbers

Heck you could use numbers like 01, 02 etc to get to 110 distinct numbers. Or use triple digit numbers for the bottom scrubs.

I would suspect there are way less dressed out each game, so you wouldn’t even need to do that.

if or when you’re two different best players on offense and defense have the same number, that’s just seems weird

why can't guys just use random numbers? Hell Memphis got a win with the same number on two jerseys against us. Wasn't a reviewable play either🤔

Honestly, this isn’t something hard to track if you’re a coach. May not expect it, but now that it’s been done, you should track rosters/positions for the teams you play.

This is actually illegal. You can't have players with same number play the same position. It came up in the egg bowl years ago when Freeze put the crack head D tackle in on offense. In this instance, it is all but impossible for an official to tell the difference. Since it is so hard to catch in realtime, there should be some form of post game punishment for a coach in a situation like this.

It was changed way in advance of the game

That shouldn't matter. The opposing team shouldn't be responsible for determining if the regular punter 80 or regular QB 80 is taking the snap on 4th down. It's a clever attempt but that's a little too much.

USC "updated" the roster number during the week so they wouldn't have to announce a change. It is Bush league at best and should be cheating similar to the OU play that was condemned by the league. Just like that play, it is more trying to trick the opponent using a non-football play.

I have always said if I was a coach my starting QB, Punter and Place kicker would all wear the same number.

Triple digit numbers, nothing says "Mr Irrelevant" like being the first kid to ever have to wear a triple digit jersey number. Kind of like the kid that gets put in RF in Little League in the last inning of the game every week. Poor kid, he'd definitely get stuffed in a locker too

In this case your active roster can only have one .#80. If #80 is in the game everyone knows who it is.
But it sounds like he’s changed numbers several weeks ago. If #1 lines up as punter next week, I’m pretty sure the opposing team will be able to tell you if it’s Kamario Taylor or Kelly Jones. If not, they are shítty scouts.

In the roster USC submitted before the game, the third string quarterback was listed as #80. Two punters can’t be listed with the same number but the quarterback is not the punter. It was negligence on the Northwestern coaches part not to notice that and say “hey, their third string quarterback is #80. That’s odd. We should watch out for a trick play.” And the NW coach admitted as much after the game.

Okay. That is kind of shady. Didn’t know the circumstances

How does having one number per side change swapping numbers?
Because then if you swapped jerseys with someone else you’d be wearing a different number. I’m fine with swapping jersey numbers with someone else every week if you want too. The point is there are enough numbers to not have two people wearing the same number.

The whole thing was done legally. Despite whether you think it’s shady or bush league, it was all announced to the other team prior to the game. And they weren’t playing the same position. One was listed as a QB and the other as a punter.
