Byrne avoided the traps that overcome so many stressed out ADs. He did not offer a hot young assistant an on-the-job tryout, as his predecessor, Jim Livengood, did with Mike Stoops. Byrne did not try to squeeze a few more years out of a guy who used to be good a long time ago, such as Mike Bellotti.
And he did not take a flyer on a small-school guy, Southern Miss' Larry Fedora, for instance, whose idea of pressure is the annual game against East Carolina.
