He called timeout before the pitch. There is no debate here. The only reason there is any controversy here is due to what happened AFTER he called timeout. It sucks for ECU but everyone did the right thing here.
I understand that, and yes, by rule the play should be dead. But the reason he called timeout is just weird. I’ve never seen a base umpire just randomly call timeout right before a pitch when nobody asked for timeout.
I actually think he did the right thing. Why on Earth should an umpire continue on if he can't see?
Agree with both of your points. Seems being able to see is the first requirement of an ump. Might have helped some if he could have added specifically why he suddenly couldn't see.
That said, I crack up at Jomboy's schtick and will forever think/hear towel whip when I watch one.

An ump couldnt see and called time because, you know, ups need to be able to see.
If he hadnt called time and was unable to make a call due to not seeing, then he would have been lit up for that too.

You cant tell from this video when he called time.
now if he called time before the pitch you are right but this video doesn’t prove that.
