East has a good team. After seeing Mt Airy and East play line play was a little better at East but Mt Airy has more play makers. The team that improves on their weakness will win the conference championship

ES killed themselves in the first half with 5 turnovers (3 fumbles, 1 muffed punt, 1 punt that hit an ES player in the back and WS recovered). Also had 3rd & goal from the 1, dropped to around the 7 or 8 on a bad snap, then missed the FG. Tremendous effort for ES on a 2nd half comeback, but West made some dynamic plays on 2 long TD passes and a kickoff return for a TD. Hats off to West on a big win. Heck of a game between both of these teams.

Looks like west did what I figured MA would do later in the year with the passing. All those turnovers definitely don't help; that would kill any team.

Gosnell's a good player but they gotta find offensive balance to be able to have the offense to beat the Granites in November. He can't carry the load by himself.

After seeing the cards last night here are my takes

Number one , you can’t judge them off of this one game, throw the cards out the window for this one. It’s a rivalry game , anything can happen. A little more personal this year fromthe coaching staff for west , diamonts son is a Coach there . A former player and coach for coach diamont is at the head coaching position and coach diamont is usually in the box for the wildcats ( not this one ) the wildcats were fired up for this one.

Number 2 - Mitchell Edwards needs more touches out of the backfield, he was dragging wildcats all over the field

Number 3 - You could throw to Jefferson Boaz across the middle all night and it would work, he don’t have the speed to run 25 yard routes, he is a matchup problem for anybody they play.

Number 4 - defensive and offensive lines looked solid

Number 5 - secondary is extremely soft, the Bears skill players will have record nights against them in November

Number 6 - To the fan / parent that hollared out on several running plays THAT HE THOUGHT THEY HAD GOT RID OF THAT COACH, ( you are classless) !! You couldn’t coach a jv little league team

Number 7 - come on November, looking forward to the cards and bears hooking up at seasons end

Carsds lost by switching qbs all night. Gosnell is your stud keep him at qb. This was definately not a Diamont coached team....be careful what u wish for. MA will have too much speed for you.

line play will be critical in a ES / MA matchup. But I like what Ma does with Poindexter by getting him out of the pocket. I see the Bears receivers having record nights against the Cards secondary. Washington kid was a big loss for ma and a huge pick up for east. Kid is a man. Still hadn’t figured out how one school system can suspend you for 365 days and you transfer out and play like the suspension never happened, hard to learn life’s lessons like that. Funny thing about last night is I can see coach diamont running Mitchell Edwards all night long with his famous full back trap. Wildcats couldn’t stop the kid, he’s a man. Buzz you know the politics in pilot won’t allow Gosnell to see the qb roll full time , some of the stuff I was hearing in the stands directed at the sidelines was atrocious, leads me to believe this coach is walking on egg shells, probably wont be around long either. Same goes for the Edwards kid , he won’t get the snaps out of the backfield cause of the politics. I might not have agreed with some of the things diamont done , But there’s one thing I can say in all honesty, he was missed last night, he has forgotten more about football than all of us sideline coaches will ever know. To me it was pretty dog gone cool to see davey diamont run across that field last night after that victory.

Lowman is his own man trying to run HIS program. If he worries how to fill Diamonts shoes he'll miss out on the opportunity to do what he sees is best. We'll learn from last night and move on.

You won’t move on with that atrocious 5 parents screaming be littling things at him. The coaches changed hands over the summer but the one thing that didn’t change is who runs the program, ( a grape farmer, that’s is what u call that guy right esod) a few other parents with a little community pull and money. That’s why you don’t see the die hard east Surry faithful in the stands anymore. I hope coach lowman has great success , I hope he establishes his own stamp on the program, that’s a special group of kids , I hope each and every one of them has the success they are capable of, I’m just a high school football fan, enjoy the game as it brings communities together like northing else. But I will admit when I’m wrong, I was wrong last year esod and you were right about that crowd, I will man up an admit that, last night listening to them scream and shout , talk that talk , all I can say is you were right and I was wrong. I wish the cards the best of luck in the coming weeks , they are my second favorite team. I am still high on them and see them playing deep.

Nothing like a loss to bring out peoples true character. They were thumping their chest, all smiles and back rubbing when they ousted Diamont and won the first four games.

Now the first sign of adversity and the true colors come out. It will be business as usual in Pilot, finish second to Mount Airy and a 2nd or 3rd round exit in the playoffs.

As ESOD mentioned several times last year, the grape farmer is an irrational blow hard that thinks he knows more than he actually does. Anyone who thinks he is actually pulling the strings or running the program are misinformed.

He pumps a lot of money into the program as well, maybe he doesn’t pull the strings, maybe he does. I know he does a lot for the little league and has done a lot for the program. But with that all set aside good luck to the cards rest of year , will be there to watch them play rags dale next week , hope to see some of the old faces back in the stands , sure did miss seeing a lot of my buddies last night, we have been watching the cards for 20 plus years together, fuss back and forth about my Bears and the cards, all in good fun, it was a bit lonely only have one or two of them there. With that being said , good luck and esod, if I pissed you off , I apologize, maybe we can talk about it at the game next week

Pretty sure some of those comments are not completely accurate. I think most people assume that the grape farmer is pumping money into the school/program, but from what I've been told that just isn't true. He may be donating or investing higher up in the county food chain, but it's not happening at the school or with the athletic programs (at least not in the last year or two). Heck, there was a ridiculous rumor last spring/summer that he gave $200K to pay off the new Field House but that is false.

How bout this watch dog , a certain some one rents a house / apartment for a certain family from a local real estate / flooring company owner to move into after a paticular transfer has been suspended from another school for 365 days. You have a whole lot of info, so do I , we can get in a pissing contest all day long after I have been nothing but complimentary about your team, I don’t really care who does what concerning the cards, I do like to see them succeed and that goes for all our local schools. But since you have the inside track, explain the top portion of the post. Also explain the substance abuse policy for Surry county schools and in particular for the east Surry athletic program? A program in which I think should be implemented on all levels of high school athletics. But That’s only if you want to get down to the nitty gritty that is, just saying. Get your popcorn buzz , can’t wait to here this answer

Give West Stokes credit they have been making big plays first 4 games. They may not have long drives but miss a tackle and it's a touchdown. How did you guys like the air horn for the touchdowns?

Great win for West Stokes last night in Pilot Mountain. Hope East Surry never wins another game due to the way they treat Hall of Fame Coaches. Wish they could have gotten beat 100-0. It's not the players who deserve the losses but the parents who control things and the administration that allows it. Coach Lowman may be a good coach but he is just there temporarily. They will have their man in place in a couple of years. I was a big East Surry fan but now proudly wear the green and white of North Stokes. We may not win but our players play with heart and the school shows a lot of class. I may not have graduated from their but I am proud to be a Viking fan now. Coach Diamont is a class act. He deserved to be treated better as well as Coach Hall, and Coach Burge.

Sounds like somebody needs to get parents under control up there.
Good first post. I forgot to give credit to the quarterback for West on that touchdown. Not many high school players can make that throw and it was dead on the money. Both teams showed good sportsmanship last night as always and good luck to both teams rest of the year

Sorry I haven’t responded quickly enough for you. Have been kinda busy this afternoon with my job as well as helping out a family member in need and I’m just now seeing this. I’m definitely not afraid to speak my piece. I agree with several of the things you have said...especially loved the take #6 about the parent/fan and idiotic comments. You should go back and reread several of my comments to know where I stand, and I think you’ll see that we agree on quite a lot.

However, I had to call out some of your misinformation regarding the perception that the grape farmer is running things. I’m plugged in with some folks in the area that are in the know and have been told consistently that his financial contributions to the school are minimal (couple thousand dollars towards weight room equipment 2-3 years ago, but nothing since). I had heard he donated uniforms to the middle school 5-6 years ago when his kids were coming through, but the high school connection was more limited. As for the accusation that someone connected to athletics is renting a home for a transfer, that’s a pretty outlandish accusation. I can honestly say I haven’t heard anything on that front (and I’m pretty sure I would have heard if something like that were true). As for the discipline enacted by one LEA not following a student to their new school - it happens all the time (I specifically remember it happening at MA in the late 1990s/early 2000s with a kid from SC, also happened more recently with an ES kid that left for WS). If it were an NCHSAA violation, it would absolutely follow to the new school. If it’s something handed down by the old system, it doesn’t automatically carry over. No one is yearning for a pissing contest. I was merely addressing the incorrect rumors that have been stated regarding the financial contributions and “control” held by a certain viticultural parent.

This group of Cards have tremendous upside and I think Coach Lowman and his group will work hard and be just fine. They didn’t display their best in the first half last night, but did battle back in the second half. Good lesson for the kids that you have to be focused and execute. The big play ability of West and the turnovers by East were the difference in the game. West definitely deserves credit. East has some time to try and improve their weaknesses before the MA showdown. It should be a good one.

As I respond to your post watch dog let me first say that I enjoy your post , you always have a depth of knowledge of sports in our area, not just hogwash. Now on to response: I can’t deny the bears have benefited from a transfer or two over the years , that is a fact , I guess my previous post was worded a little wrong , it’s not the transferring that is the problem , I think each family and kid has the right to choose as long as it is done the right way. I think the issue here is the reason of transfer, I won’t list that here , but we both know the reason. The reason behind being suspended for 365 days. I guess that is more a ethical question to where sports and winning is placed above the interest of the kid. Now on to claim you call out landish. I will leave this one with this , stop by pilot floor covering, talk to a few people that own quite a bit of rental property in pilot, you will find the answers to the outlandish claims rather quickly, it is talked about very openly. Now on to this years cards , they are loaded, I wish coach lowman nothing but the best , he has a whole lotta football team to play ball with on Friday nights. Gosnell is a special player with a few weapons at his disposal. Mitchell Edwards is a man amongst boys, lot like the back I saw from north Surry last night. Boaz is a whole lotta target to hit across the middle . Very talented group. Hope they beat the breaks off ragsdale on Friday night . But most of all hope the group of parents get behind there coach and team , support them . Not bash them at every turn when a play goes wrong. Make comments like ( I thought we got rid of that coach last year ). That coach last year is a hall of fame coach, a legend , forgot more about football than most Of us will ever know. Classy enuff that he didn’t get in the box on Wednesday night for west to coach against his former team. He was there against the Bears when they came to west. Where he has been all season . I won’t post on this anymore. But there are some things that are facts others are rumors , maybe the money from the grape farmer is a rumor, maybe a couple other things are rumors ( field houses paid off etc ) but I can assure you one thing , the things I have talked about here are not

The "administration" (which is led by and includes some parents) for ES athletics has gone to crap over the past few years. The treatment of some of the best coaches ever is pathetic and those responsible (and they know who they are) should be ashamed. It will all come to light in the future and some of you will be shocked when you hear the details.

It was a great game to watch and a pretty good atmosphere on a Wednesday night. I thought East looked a lot better up front on D then West. Turnovers killed East. 13 for West won the game. 4 at QB throws it well. Gosnell and Boaz threw it pretty well and the run game was working. I saw Diamonts son run across the field after the game and that was pretty cool. East has a lot to work with and I think they have a good staff. Coach Lowman will get the job done.
