Ed Orgeron should be hired as our DC for next season.

Doesn't he get paid something crazy like $600,000 to coach the DL and recruit? I'm not sure if he'd make a good coach but it would be a hell of an addition as far as recruiting.

With that said, I hope we go after someone like Brick Haley for DC.

After UM fired him I thought crooms shouldve hired him, it's a win win for us. We could get an ok defensive coach with an ability to recruit the top players in any state. You know a part of him would love to get back at UM for firing him and the talent he could bring us would help us reach our goals. He may not be the eat D coach but his upside is well worth the hiring!

My only problem is that O didn't do a great job at Ole Miss as both HC and DC, but he may do better now that he has experience and will not have to fool with being a HC ever again. It would be wait and see as a HC, definately excited as a recruiter.

I still would go after Dick Bumpas at TCU. I know Jon Tenuta at ND will be available in all likelihood, and he is a respected name out there, but could be pretty expensive. If there is a lot of fallout from the Les Miles debacle, John Chavis would be a nice get. Bruce Fowler does a good job at Vandy. Tyrone Nix is a hot name right now, and would add a lot of fuel to the fire.

Also, I think Brick Haley would be an awesome hire, and probably would be the guy I would go after the hardest.

I believe he is one of the better DCs in the entire country. That would be a great get and as you said, he'll likely be available at the end of the season. I'm not sure if any big names are looking for new DCs.. hell he may be retained by the new staff at ND.

Brick Haley would be a great choice, also.

That's why McCluster had his best day in his career against him. I don't want O The Coach anywhere near starkville unless he is picking the median in the bypass for cans.

He's making close to $700,000, and it'll probably be over $800K with incentives. I don't know what you pay your coordinators, but ours make less than half that I believe.

ETA: Let me rephrase that. You could afford to pay him, but you'd have to bump your entire coaching staff's salary just to bring it within reason.

Also, I think he'd be ****** as a DC. Anything past position coach/recruiting coordinator is just Peter principle for him. He's best at evaluating and chasing talent and then taking up a spot as a position coach. You try to get him to play strategy for your defense and you're in trouble.

since Monte Kiffen is their DC. I don't know how much input O had on that defense, but apparently playing a Tampa Two is not the way to go to stop Ole Miss.

but their pass D is currently ranked 76th, rush D is ranked 80th, scoring D is ranked 56th. Total defense they are ranked 80th. Why would we want to hire their defensive coordinator? That seems like a Torbush-esque hire all over again to me. I'd go afterTCU's coordinator. Hell, let's just go grab Charlie Strong.

Everett Winthers at North Carolina.

Defense is top 10 at UNC. He looks young to me, has coached at USM as a DB coach, has coached in the NFL for the Saints and Titans.

I dont want a DC that spent 4 years as a WR's coach...Your top DC's rarely coach offense...and while Crooms race didnt help, I've seen Melvin's race help us many times...its all about who you hire...

He is very highly respected. Teams more prestigious than ya'll (that's not smack talk, just an observation) have tried to hire Bumpas and failed. Miles will get another year and so will Chavis, if that does blow up, he might be an option. Fowler is close to Johnson, I'm not sure he would leave. It would make zero sense for Nix to leave Ole Miss for State. It's a lateral move and he is coaching for a proven guy in Oxford. Like it or not, Mullen is still not proven. The only way to attract hot names with unproven coaches is with money. If you pay Nix to leave Ole Miss, you are going to have to pull that money out of other assistances current salaries. That isn't going to go over well.

Brick Haley could be a good choice. He has never been a DC before, but he is a hell of a recruiter. It would be a gamble, but it could work out on both ends. Even if he can't coach, he is still going to pull you guys some players.

he is not even a coordinator at UT and never will be. Mullen is too smart for that silliness. He is an over-paid buffoon. Terrible...terrible coordinator.

That's a position coach worthy of a shot as a coordinator. Lots and lots of upsides. I hope that doesn't happen.

Yeah, we definitely need Melvin to stick around. He's not a bad coach either, he's hands on, directing them on the sidelines coaching them up during while the offense is on the field, etc. Gotta keep him.

One of the plays that went all the way by Arky Melvin was raising hell at the safety, don't remember which one, to line up where on who he was suppose to, the safety didn't that guy catches the ball and scores. The DB's are inexperienced and young.

The lack of a pass rush and missed tackles is what has hurt our pass defense as much as anything.

Say no to cheese. He may end up being ok, but all he had to do was maintain what was left to him, and he didn't do such a hot job of that. I can understand how you could lose your defensive players when Crooms is eating their souls and throwing them under the bus every chance he gets, but Ellis Johnson managed to do it for several years. I still don't know how somebody smart enough to be that good enough of a defensive coordinator could be dumb enough to go to work for the Crooms.
