EJ's defenses were very good. But it won't impress internet heroes that live on statistics and stars. McCorvey's 3 & out habit made their stats look bad. But don't take my word for it - just ask Steve Spurrier.
My only hesitancy on EJ is his age. He is 61. After taking a good DC gig at SC, then failing as a HC, I have to wonder if he's still got it at age 61.
We can overlook him having left us before. Blame that on Croom and call it good.
I'd be leary. Dude's defense looked terrible in CUSA and continual rumors over the player hating him. So the question is whether they just had no talent or if he put it on cruise control. He was also never a great recruiter and his wife didn't like it here supposedly.
I might consider him as a co-defensive co-ordinator, it worked for Diaz and Wilson. Or maybe D-line coach. I'd be kinda worried about burn out too, at his age, but that's something Dan will have to determine in an in person interview.
If Wilson goes, Ellis, if available, should be considered & I'm sure USM would appreciate as it would likely lower the buyout they give him-- if reports are true.
Probably wouldn't work, but I'd love to keep Wilson and bring EJ here as a position coach or co-defensive coordinator or whatever it takes. ****, make him an administrator. If Wilson's ego would let him defer to EJ on game planning and some practice management, I've got to think it would help him. The only concern I would have (other than hiring someone the everyone acknowledged was there to basically tutor Wilson) is that I'm not sure of EJ's success was due to his scheme and how much of it was that he hammered fundamentals in practice. He might not be much help as simply an advisor.
