I saw on genespage (Yea, I still read at swan lake because I'm a recruiting junky and this rivals merger has ruined BDJ) where posters are claiming ESPN is going to break a huge story on a SEC west team as soon as the pre season top 25 is released. Does anyone here have actual information on this? Does it have legs?

*If this has been covered, I don't really know how I missed it, and would appreciate a link along with the insults.

First it's Yahoo that's gonna break it... next it's ESPN....

People have heard that it could be about Auburn, Bama, LSU, MSU, OM, and Ark, which reallynarrows the teams down from a "blanket-like" SECW wording...

With that being said, I really think we're going to hear more on the William Lyles and LSU connection and I have a gut feeling that it's going to deal with Patrick Peterson, as well as other players.

I have heard things about LSU and this Lyles character, I guess I was really just hoping for an Auburn burning. Wishful thinking I guess.

It may be this:

Used to be the University of Miami Hurricanes had a lock on recruiting
football talents in the "state of South Florida," but over the past few
decades other schools have recognized the importance of our local talent
hotbed. Now the NCAA is launching an investigation into allegations of
shady recruiting tactics in the region. No Florida schools are involved,
and the NCAA is targeting Ohio State, Louisiana State, Auburn and
Tennessee.

The report comes without much detail from The Sun-Sentinel's Dave Hyde:
"NCAA
investigators are coming to South Florida this week to look into the
recruiting of several high-school football stars and the methods of
several colleges in doing so, according to a source.

...The
schools involved have been successful for years in getting players out
of South Florida, and enough red flags have been raised about money
changing hands in the recruiting process to merit the investigation, the
source said.

High schools officials, street agents, seven-on-seven tournaments - they're all going to be asked questions by the NCAA."
The
investigation probably grew out of probes already targeting Auburn and
Ohio State. The Auburn Tigers are still facing the heat for allegations
of money exchanging hands that lead to the team snagging Cam Newton,
while Ohio State's sweater-vest-loving coach Jim Tressel recently
resigned in the midst of an investigation into his program over, amongst
other things, players trading memorabilia for free tattoos.

Sounds
like the program's problems could just be beginning. It's the rare bit
of news that can make 'Noles, 'Canes and Gators fans all happy. They
have enough competition recruiting the state between themselves without
out-of-state schools coming down here with allegedly shady tactics.

Supposedly it's ESPN, but it's also Yahoo, and then it's SI, and then it's the NYT (Thamel). So who the F knows.

Saw a post that said Wetzel tweeted that the Yahoo guys confirmed that their story does not involve LSU or Alabama.

What I can't figure out is why any of these media outlets would tip their hand to anyone about whatever story they are sitting on. Makes no sense.

I saw on either here or Blitz that it also doesn't involve Ole Miss or Arkansas.

"What I can't figure out is why any of these media outlets would tip their hand to anyone about whatever story they are sitting on. Makes no sense." I don't understand why they are sitting on it. If it's true then break it.

Yahoo guys said it wasn't Rebs or Razorbacks. If true, that leaves 2 teams and 1 very large obvious connection that is now residing in the state of North Carolina. I kinda doubt that stuff though. I think it's gonna be lyles and LSU.

1) if you are gonna come out making clear and specific allegations about a coach/player/program that will ruin reputations, you make sure to dot all your i's and cross all your t's before you go public. you filter it through lawyers and vet all your sources for accuracy. that takes time.

2) maximum exposure. breaking the story in a month basically on the eve of the 2011 kickoff will be huge. most of us being on message baords follow year round, but a lot of more casual fans do not follow so closely during the offseason, but in a month they will start paying attention again as the season nears.

Are you saying Wetzel acknowledged there's a story coming?

Regardless...with so many hounds on the trail, **** is gonna hit the fan sooner or later. But not much later.

fyi i couldn't bring it up again, but there was a NYT article today discussing the coaches' meetings last month. the ncaa had a rep there talking about increased enforcement, and apparently chizik decided to push the issue and kept asking specific question regarding the $Camdal and whether the ncaa was finished investigating, and finally the ncaa rep pointedly told him that when the ncaa was through investigating auburn he's know and that the investigation was very much still alive. this was confirmed by at least 4 men's basketball coaches (stallings, kennedy, and johnson for sure), and apparently everyone in the room was shifting around uncomfortably while chizik kept going at the ncaa rep.

i hope dan was in the back giggling to himself.

here's the link if anyone has a log in.

all of this has to be dealing with auburn. there is no way we have done anything dirty enough to warrant this much internet traffic. I know deep in my maroon heart that auburnis gonna get17ed eventually.

This is the NCAA we're talking about. Cam probably had a flat on his car during his visit and had the tire replaced. His dad showed up later and paid for it. Get ready for the hammer.

AU deserves whatever they get. And to be honest, I'm a little giddy over the fact that the media might finally force the NCAA's hand in this case. I'm all warm and fuzzy on the inside. That will show these 17ers, you can't out-cheat us and get away with it.

Wetzel denied including or excluding any school in the interview I heard today, but didn't deny a story. And unless he deleted the tweet, he hasn't confirmed anything there either.

This isn't the first time there's been a "bombshell story coming out" report.

I'm holding my water until it actually appears.
