As reported by Salt Lake City Fox affiliate KTSU, Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon High announced its new mascot and school colors on Wednesday, with Canyons School District officials proclaiming that the school's teams will be called the Chargers, using a blue and white color scheme.</p>

That's all fine and good except for the fact that the school's future student body -- which was given the opportunity to select its own future mascot -- had chosen to be the Cougars. With some 23 percent of the student vote, the Cougar choice was far preferred to other options, which included the Chargers, Diamondbacks, Falcons, Raptors, Broncos, Bears and Cavaliers.</p>

The reason why the future student body gravitated toward Cougars is pretty clear: Area collegiate power BYU uses the Cougar as its mascot and enjoys an enormous fan base of area residents and those who follow the Mormon faith (BYU is a Mormon institution).</p>

Still, the Canyons School Board refused to accept the Cougar as a mascot out of fear that it might offend older women. In the current edition of the Webster Dictionary, the second definition for cougar sights a slang terminology that refers to "a middle-aged woman seeking a romantic relationship with a younger man."</p>

Especially when there's a Cougars as an instate college team.

Conspiracy theory: Perhaps the school board is populated by USU grads.

The group that turned down Cougars and chose Chargers--did they check up on any other meanings for the new mascot name? I looked it up, and they might prefer Cougar to Chargers. And without looking it up, there are probably unusual definitions for each of those other choices, too. I'm pretty sure I don't even want to see an alternate definition of "Broncos".

BTW, they suggest looking up your name. Let's just say I'm seriously considering going back to being called Patrick. Much better urban dictionary definition.

In a Rocky Mountain state, I'd think no one would ever equate "Cougar" with their feared definition ... it's merely a big cat that roams the mountains. You can take darn near any word and twist the meaning to something else.<div>
</div><div>Reminds me of all the hoopla with Indian names. If they were used in a detrimental manner, I could sort of understand it ... but when Indian names are used, it's exclusively because of their reputation for being brave and stalwart warriors. Perhaps "Redskins" could be pushing it a bit .....</div>

: Bears are almost always gay or bisexual men. Increasingly, transgender or transsexual men (trans men) and those who shun labels for gender and sexuality are also included within bear communities.</p>

Younger or smaller men who identify with bear culture may also be labelled as cubs.</p>

but it sorta fits, dontcha think? :) Also, as far as I know, the term "cougar" for a middle-aged woman on the prowl for a younger guy is a relatively new term.<div>
</div><div>Connotations mean a lot though ... for instance ... even something as benign as "crank a tractor" turns into something explicitly sexual when you say, "Boy, I'd really like to crank HER tractor" ... makes no sense but the meaning is clear. And it's never going to stop as long as there are biological differences in the gender ... just the way our creator made us. Hypersensitivity in almost all aspects of our society is wrecking normal behavior.</div>

I didn't know that. Back when UM decided on the bear thing I did a google image search for bears so I could be a smartass to a buddy of mine.

</p>

</p>
I should not have done that.
