event staff vs shriners

Maybe it's already been discussed, but will you guy's clear things up for me?

I see we switched from using the Shriners as ticket people and ushers, and started using "Event Services" . I was told the Shriners had done this for maybe 30 years, and the money they raised went to the things the Shriners support, but the Athletic Dept had decided to change, and we now have a company from Alabama running the staffing. I know my son's roomate was hired to work events for this new company for campus events. What's the story behind this?

Also, it seems, at any MSU function I've been to lately includes lots of excitement about Cowbells, and almost always a reference to "need more cowbell". I've heard there will be enforcement of the SEC rules for noisemakers for the LSU game, and Cowbells will be checked for at the gate.

I got my whiskey in as usual and there were plenty cowbells inside.

Several people were turned away at the gate or told to proceed to gate 10. we said to hell with it and lobbed ours on the otherside and walked in. Whiskey wasn't a problem either. Overall I didn't have any problem with the new staff and they were actually giving advice about how to get the cowbell in and yet people were still cursing them out and ignoring them.</p>

1. Yes, we switched from the Shriners to real event staff. The event staff were very nice and I thought they did an excellent job. The bottom line truth is that the day we switched from tearing tickets to using hand-held computer scanners we took one technological leap past the poor old Shriners. The event staff know how to use the scanners and know what to do when they have a problem with a ticket scanning or getting the scanner to function properly. It's always nice when we can help out a charity but the Athletic Department's job is to get people in and out of the stadium. This was a good move.

2. Nothing has changed here except the willingness of the Athletic Department to play footsie with the line the SEC has drawn in the sand. It is a SEC rule that you cannot bring artificial noisemakers to a game (any game thanks to an addendum two years ago that LT agreed to). That being said the SEC doesn't exactly have it's own police force so they can't do a damn thing to enforce this rule short of punishing our school (there used to be on field penalties for the cowbells but the NCAA took those away before last year). So, in order to give the appearance of stopping the cowbells they have been told at the gate not to let them in. They aren't strip searching people or anything so it's not exactly hard to sneak in, put some paper in the bell to stop it from clanging and put it under your shirt in the small of you back. Everyone at MSU (now that LT is gone) wants you to bring a cowbell but they have to at least make the attempt to enforce the SEC rule.

Took about 15 minutes to get through the gate, as the scanners were slow. They were looking in bags and purses, but no one was being hassled.

Seems like the Shriners would cost us less than the , as they are volunteers, but there may be liability issues in play

As long as you aren't obvious about it (i.e., have noisemakers in plain sight) I believe they will let you in. For example, my six-year-old daughter had a little megaphone -- the kind you get in the Hump when you buy an extra large popcorn -- and they made her throw it away. It was so ridiculous -- I did buy it at a MSU function after all -- I didn't even get mad.

Yes it has already been discussed many many times but it is a VERY important issue so maybe we need to go over it again for newer sixpack readers and people who don't read everyday.

These new ticket takers have been told to watch out for cowbells but to also be very "fan friendly" and not violate your rights to privacy. This means just simply looking inside purses and making sure you don't have a cowbell in hand.

The University pretty much told them that cowbells are illegal and also released a few articles to the media (it reflector and CD) to cover their asses with the SEC. All this means is stick your cowbell deep down in your girls purse, or simply tuck it away in your wasteline. People who were asked to not bring their cowbells in just did not work hard enough to hide them. There were just as many cowbells in the game as there were last year or any other year for that matter. This tells me that not much has changed in the way these people search you or purses before the game.

Nothing except better technology is any different than last year. QUIT BEING SHEEP PEOPLE. GET YOUR COWBELL IN THE GAME.

They patted my on the back, feeling mine and told me i couldn't go in with it, but they didn't do anything when I passed it through the gate right in front of them. If it takes a little more work to get your bell into the game, so be it.
