Recruits want to go to a winning team. Back when we were playing a killer schedule, did you ever read on Genespage about some recruit wanting to go to MSU because the schedule was tough? NO.
You may very well understand that we are a building program- but you don't understand HOW to build. The problem with people like you is you think after a couple of bowls and things looking like they're headed in the right direction that it is all of a sudden time to take on national powerhouses. It doesn't work that way. It takes longer than three bowl seasons- we were just 7-6 last year. Dan hasn't even had a full class of fifth year players that have played under him. Scheduling like we did after three bowl seasons (98, 99, 00) didn't work for us then- why would it work for us now? Because Dan has us going in the right direction like Jackie did back in the day?
Again, I don't have a problem playing tough teams- but I do have a problem if it is too soon because it could hurt what we have built up already.
And hell yes, what happened with our schedule in the early 2000's could have been helped because our AD was the one who made it out. What did an NCAA investigation have to do with us playing Oregon? The NCAA didn't tell us to play West Virginia- although a road game there appears to be a suitable punishment since they aren't doing the death penalty anymore.
And to answer your question- it's going to take us more like five to eight years of top 25 finishes and bowls before we can schedule more difficult teams every year like Bama.
It is hilarious that you are saying that I am going to get us left behind at the train station when you are suggesting that we do the very same thing that LT did. And we all know how forward thinking he was. What I am suggesting is going to give us a long term base for success in football.
And back to the BCS- we have scheduled the way that I have said we should and we are now currently 12th in the BCS and have really only played UT. And now we are in the discussion of going into Tuscaloosa at 7-0 with a possibly Gameday assignment. Please leave me behind at this train station. And you can say that we may start out more quickly playing someone like OSU- that may be true, but it really doesn't matter where you start- it matters where you finish. And that means beating Bama and LSU- playing games where we can rest our starters and build confidence and depth is the best way to have a chance to do that.
And hey- you were the one talking about your big boy panties, so I'm just taking your word for it.
I think recruits want to go where there is a potential to win games. You and I can agree on that. No, I never read that on Genes page, but I have read that recruits wanted to sign with us because we played in the sec. Guess what? That is a tough schedule.
I think I have as much understanding of HOW to build as you do. Do you work for the athletic department? No? I didn't think so. Perhaps you should put in an application, I'm sure they would jump on it, since it is obvious they are missing such a vast knowledge of HOW to build a program. OSU is NOT a national powerhouse. Oh wait, have they had 5-8 years of finishing in the top 25? Which is your criteria for being a powerhouse team. Hell, I don't even think they are ranked this year. And I will reiterate, we had a lot more problems "back then" then scheduling. I'm not advocating going out and loading up all 4 ooc games, but one game a year shouldn't kill us. I can't imagine the bed wetting you're going to do when we start playing 9 conference games every year.
The NCAA had nothing to do with who we played, but it had a tremendous effect on how we played. For instance when we traveled to Oregon, (btw, they were in the same place we are now as far as their program was concerned) we didn't have Fant. He had to sit that game because of the NCAA. The NCAA did everything they could to damage our program so Jackie would eventually have to go. That was their goal to begin with, to drive Jackie out of coaching college football. They accomplished that along with a little help from our "friends". It also took a big toll on our head coach who had to spend more time fighting the NCAA then he did coaching, which in turn led to the downward spiral that caused us to have a decade of losing.
We didn't get left behind at the station during LT's tenure. We got thrown off the train. We got left behind back in the late 40's, and we have been trying to play catch up ever since. This is a new era. We have more money then we have ever had, thanks to TV contracts with the SEC. I don't won't to be left behind again due to small timid thinkers like you.
I will admit that our schedule has helped us tremendously this year. But the bcs is on its way out, so that is not going to continue to be the case going forward in the future. We have to continue to plan for the future, not the past. I agree, we have to have more depth. We accomplish that by recruiting. We will never catch bama or lsu in recruiting by NOT scheduling one game a year ooc that captures the media's attention. I agree if we never win one of them, it will make no difference. It wold probably hurt more than help, bit if we slip up against one of these pushovers, like we almost did against Troy, it will hurt us even more. We can talk about how Troy is no pushover, etc, etc, but on the national scene, they are perceived as one and hat is what will count. And I agree about where you finish. Wasn't it the bear who said "It's not what you do in September, but what you do in November that people remember"? If we win that game against OSU next year, it will jump start us into the national spotlight. Not to mention it will get our foot in the door of some recruits in Texas that we wold not normally have a chance with.
And hey - I won't mention you wetting your panties anymore as long as you leave my big boy pants out of the conversation.
