I kind of figured the airlines have to pay a lot of money to land there. Unless the airport is giving them cut rate to keep them flying in.

Jackson - Evers pushes 1.2 million passengers each year and they can't afford to fund the most basic capital projects without money from the feds. Most of their money probably goes to a team of grant writers.

What a freaking embarrassment of mismanagement that airport is.
Goes along with the theme of everything else in Jackson that doesn't work: the libraries, sewer system, water meters, Thalia Mara Hall, police dept, judges, mayor, Hinds County jail, city council, county supervisors, convention center. I'm sure I missed some stuff but that's a start

No airport would survive without massive Federal grants and PFC money. Very few capital projects don't involve one or the other.
Correct. The grants themselves are typical and yearly. The problem with JAN is that they don’t maintain anything to the point that the grants can actually help.

i've talked to several of the hinds county supervisors at our conferences. That is the most inept bunch of folks running a large population county in the state. and it isn't even close. the new one that took david archie's place just walks around with a bag around his neck collecting vendor give away junk. even holmes county has a better board

I flew into JAN one weekday back in 1996 and went down a working escalator to the baggage claim.
About a 1|3rd of the way down I realized what I just saw on the arrival/departure level was Chris O’Donnel and Faye Dunaway making a movie called The Chamber.
I went back up the escalator and proceeded to insert myself into the scene, actually brushed shoulders with O’Donnell as he and Faye were walking down the concourse.
We did about 20 takes of that one scene prior to breaking for lunch.
Had my pic taken, had blisters on my feet taken care of by the med staff, ate lunch with actors and extras, got two tee shirts and then just left bc my feet were killing me and I was WAY WAY LATE for my meetings but I had a good story to tell about why.
About 8-10 months later I went to the opening Friday night of The Chamber in Atlanta with a date fully expecting to see myself in that scene.
I ended up on the cutting room floor as that whole morning shoot of the scene inside of the JAN was cut from the movie!
Realized then how and why a movie takes forever to film and how so many scenes filmed never make it to the movie.

What's really sad and was completely foreseen, before the City of Jackson took over, it was rated one of the best airports in the country under some certain size.

City of Jackson has always run that airport. They built it (with grant money). Difference is, for many years it was competently run. That changed.

They owned it, but it was run by a separate board. The Jackson Municipal Airport Authority. In 2016, control was given to the city of Jackson after a court fight.

ETA: The airport is so bad, that the State is taking it over.

JMAA board has always been appointed by the mayor. JMAA still runs the airport. State tried to take it over in 2016, but 7 plaintiffs sued to stop the takeover. The case has generated a lot of legal fees and is still ongoing with apparently no end in site. Control of the airport has not changed. What has changed is the quality of board members appointed to the JMAA board.

Ok. The way the article that I read was written, it seemed like someone else used to appoint the board. After re-reading it, I think you are right. You are definitely right about the quality of board members nosediving.

The city and district court judge won't accept being overruled.

From the article: U.S. District Judge Carlton Reeves has ruled in favor of the city and JMAA several times in the airport litigation, but then has been reversed by the Fifth Circuit.

Well, he's not being reversed now because he's an idiot. He's not even trying to apply the law but just doesn't like that the city can have control of the airport taken from them.

My understanding is that the board has gotten better recently, but regional airports are tough and once you dig a hole for yourself, it's hard to dig out of without somebody other than the FAA bringing an influx of cash.

The real problem aside from the airport being mishandled is that Rankin County saw all these commercial properties being exempt from taxes and the county not really benefiting because it all just went to more mismanagement and expensive vacations for the commissioners.

As long as the black nationalists like Lamumba/Thompson/Stokes/ETC continue to shun non-black participation in governance, there will never be cooperation in any meaningful respect. Current "cooperation" is a complete sham. The CCID is a giant middle finger to Lamumba and his ilk. The federal takeover of the water system is not "cooperation." There is no "cooperation" with those fools.

Explain to me why Flowood or Pearl or Brandon would ever agree to extend their utilities to JMAA's non-navigation properties without any say over the manner of development? Not happening. This is why the 5th circuit is standing on its head to make Reeves end what may be the most ridiculously stupid, ill-conceived and fruitless litigation in the history of our state. The stalemate is untenable and only hurts both constituencies. Once a fully representative airport board is in place to address the legitimate interests of ALL stakeholders in the airport and its economic development parcels surrounding the airport (and not just the fools that have run Jackson in the f'n ground), the airport corridor will be positioned to take off. Pun intended.

A few years ago, my former company was called to discuss improving the airports HVAC. We had a set time for me to be there, but they made me drive around for 30 plus minutes because they could not figure out where I could park. Finally, they told me to park in the parking garage but made me pay for it. I then set down with some of the leadership and they told me they had major issues, but they didn't want to pay. One person even suggested to sue current provider. She didn't say it out right but clearly was going that direction. We then toured the airport. Thier cooling tower had grass growing on the sides and if I remember correctly a tree also. The guy showing me around asks how much it would be to fix, which I respond $500,000 plus. He then questions my knowledge and says that he could not believe I would rip them off like that. It could easily be done for $25,000. I said, why don't you do it then and I walked away and never went back. If you have to go to that airport I would not breath the air.

I have a similar story about the JMAA's drinking water wells from about 15 years ago. The well screens failed and was pulling in a bunch of sand and JMAA refused to fix it. I do not know if it has been fixed, but I wouldn't drink their water, either.

I agree about the governance of the airport and city, I think we all do. But it's no different than Birmingham or Atlanta, as far as being a city-appointed board. While I love the idea of a regional board, I just don't see how you can simply take away their asset with one fell swoop. Seems to me like the City either needs to be bought out, or the board should just create some new positions, and transition to a stand-alone entity with the backing of whoever that is (City, Rankin County, etc.). But to do that, Rankin County would need to bring their checkbook to the table.

On the land around the airport, that likely has federal obligations (but may not - they have a lot of land). Not anything will work there, it's not like typical economic development.

Not sure about GTR but GPT got a lot of cash influx after Katrina. They seem to be well managed since then. If you completely redid JAN with federal money and then gave control to Rankin County, they’d probably still be a nice small airport for the next 15-20 years also.
