I hate to interrupt this MENSA meeting but how many public dollars funded Franken's private school education. I'll hang up and listen to your answer.
I don't care about public dollars, I opined about choice. Franken can afford the CHOICE of sending his kids to private schools, just like the Obama's. But they don't want poor inner city parents to have that same CHOICE, to select a school that is safe, has a good learning environment, good teachers and will give them a good opportunity in life. Rich Dems have it but don't want the poor to have it.
Surprised you know what Mensa is. Most eye glass fitters have no clue.
Like I said, choice for rich Dems and to hell with poor black and brown children in inner cities. BTW, my daughters went to Christian schools and they all offer scholarships to the needy all the time. Truly shows your ignorance.
Personally, I want good schools for all kids. If a school isn't effective, it shouldn't be a choice.....it should be FIXED....ASAP!
Boom, how many more years must go by before these poor kids have an opportunity at a good quality education? It has been decades now and school performance in many inner cities is simply terrible. And the problem is getting worse. Check out the drop out rates in NYC schools or DC schools, or Detroit schools, etc., it will shock you. No wonder these kids have little chance and turn to drugs and violence.
You want to help the needy in inner cities and reduce crime and help the community, give the parents and the kids a choice.
I teach in Dayton.....it's bad, but without help.....it ain't getting better my friend. You want to pass the buck. All those kids at the inner city high school going to go to those private schools are they? Or are you advocating we save a few?
Exactly. No public money should ever go to a private school. Invest in public schools. I went through 16 years of public schools. Then my 4 years in eyeglass fitting school was at a private school but there are only 18 or so eyeglass fitting schools in the country. Would've preferred a cheaper public school but you gotta do what you gotta do. Thank the flying spaghetti monster for student loans. Otherwise, I wouldn't be the eyeglass fitter that I am today pulling in $25-30K a year.
Private schools, charter schools, magnet schools, lots and lots of options. And if demand exceeds supply more schools will open, that is what capitalism and competition is all about. We have had failing schools for decades and no improvement. You seem to want to keep the status quo. The status quo won't get it done.
Even better yet, the public schools losing the kids know they MUST improve or they downsize. If the administrators and teachers want to keep their jobs, improve the quality of the education they provide or risk your jobs. It's called competition and it works.

We already spend more money than any other country. Simply throwing money at a problem is not a solution. Typical lib. Ignore the problem, simply spend more. Does an eyeglass fitter when finding a problem, ignore the root cause and provide cosmetic treatment? Perhaps in your case that is true, but the good ones drill down to the root cause and fix it. Window treatment doesn't work.

You're treating the education of a child like any other product. It's not the same cost / revenue structure. It's not cost effective for a school to keep class sizes low, it IS cost effective to weed out trouble students (those that struggle academically and those that need additional discipline), it IS cost effective to prevent those that can't afford it out......we need to rethink public education, but not through magnet or charter schools. We need a more comprehensive education for all US students. So that we don't continue to encourage a society full of people that think money and business are everything, or people that think Hollywood and pop culture are everything. Too many people either don't vote, or vote to endanger our planet's future for short term gains.
Your post was all over the board. Competition works in any enterprise, public or private. Human nature, after all, is human nature whether you work in government or for businesses. People will work harder and do a better job when they know their jobs are on the line.
Education is critical to the success of this nation and our public education system as it is currently structured is failing mostly in our inner cities, but elsewhere as well. Public school choice, vouchers, charter schools, magnet schools, on line schools, etc. can all be part of the solution.
We're already doing something wrong. Spend more good money after bad?

Who said teachers shouldn't be held accountable? Competition isn't the only thing that holds people accountable....good leadership does as well. Teacher tenure is the most devastating thing in the system right now....I'm a teacher, and I'm 100% against it.
It's not just teachers tenure boom, it's also teachers unions. More importantly, when competition is introduced and revenues may be lost to a particular school, their entire school, administrators, teachers and others now fearful for their jobs, will do everything they can to make the education system better in that school. And not just better either, safer and with more discipline and structure.
Again, look at the dropout rates in many of our inner cities. Look at the achievement scores in these schools. Radical change is absolutely required because nothing has worked.
