No. Granted, he is dealing with a depleted roster but, Pope has also underachieved in games I.e. unprepared against Michigan State, coaching against UNC, etc…He needs to keep motivating and coaching this group and then be evaluated at the end of the season.

Funny to think…….if they had just finished off UNCheat and Missouri, which they should have, things would seem a lot different right now.

I wouldn't even extend him if he makes the tournament. He has a lot to prove. Tonight's one was awesome and I gave him credit, but there's been way more negatives than positives.

If you factor in what he has dealt with from an injury perspective, he has done quite well. Heck of a win tonight either way.

Well, we've hit Indiana status then.
You hit Indiana staus by flipping coaches over and over again. Patience is a virtue. Unless you have a Pitino or Cal type floating out there, you make zero moves.

Not many or any of those guys out there now. We apparently didn't go after Lloyd or Golden...those should have been targets. At this point you play out at least next year and see where we are.

OP was in hawg heaven. All he cares about is 5 stars and "exciting" basketball.

Suck on that loss.

Extend him how? As in next season? We'll im pretty certain that win last night did that as Barney isn't canning him after year no matter what now.
.
I dont want Pope fired but if he stepped down tommorow i wouldnt she'd a tear. I certainly don't want him any longer than the 5 year ( 4+1) contract he already has hes Tubby 2.0 at best - and those that lived thru it know Tubbyball wasnt that great a era ( to be kind) .

Love the win but it begs the question, why does he not have them ready to play against Vandy or Gonzaga?
Or MSU, UL or Bama……

I noticed that from last year where there were some games where we totally unprepared.

is he assigning some games to the wrong staff? Are they not doing enough opponent related prep with players?

it’s very strange to have these games where we completely look unprepared…..

i am curious about the changes that were made in practice that gave Kentucky a chance at a better start.

Love the win but it doesn’t completely erase the 25 point loss at candy then the 30 point debacle vs the zags just to name a few. If he would coach like this for the entire year, then maybe unc & Missouri doesn’t happen. He’s been a different person including coach this year from last year, stop getting blown out and be competitive at bama and other big games before any sort of extension is even brought up…..and maybe just maybe sign 1 big time 5* recruit as well.

Mitch hasn't offered a lifetime contract in awhile, so you never know. He's probably getting that urge again.

Beating Cal is no great feat these days.Since 2015 he was 25-37 against ranked teams and had ONE ncaa tournament win his last 5 years here.

REALLY happy with the win though!

Pope joins a very long list of coaches with less talent beating Cal's ***.
Cal had no business losing this game, he has way too much talent to lose to this depleted team.
You know that is a good point....

Cal's vaunted man to man defense....has really fallen off...even in his final UK years. Why they allowed Oweh to get off so many shots going to the basket was truly bizarre defensive gameplan. His bigs were in no mental preparedness to help on ball screens....constantly in drop coverage, never hedging it or forcing UK to counter. To allow this roster to score 85 points and out rebound by so many ....great for the Cats but another stumper by Cal.

It’s another example of that 2009-2020 talent covering up Cal's massive flaws.
In those days, sans 2016 and 2018, we had really good defensive numbers, but once his talent level fell off, so did his defense.
It really showed up the last few seasons. Those teams weren't doing the simplest of things.
Zack Gulke (Oakland) got everything he wanted. He ran right through the heart of our defense on every play and nobody, not one single blue jersey, put a body on him to stop him from getting through to his desired spots.
Freaking Doug Edirt got whatever he wanted.
Cal needs elite shot blockers and guards with serious length to do anything defensively.

Nope. This is what he does. Pope’s record shows it, he’ll win at Kansas then drop to Tulsa. Beat Illinois then lose to TCU. Popes record is one of playing up sometimes and not at others, inconsistent coach. Which is why I wanted Calipari gone, you have to win consistently here and he never has and probably never will.
