Extra year for winter athletes likely, new transfer policy being considered

Various online outlets are reporting that the NCAA is likely to follow the precedent set for spring and fall ‘20 athletes and extend an extra year of eligibility to winter ‘21 athletes in the coming days. Not sure how this will effect scholarship caps moving forward, but if it happens, it’s safe to assume that a program like ours will benefit, as ending up with several 6-year super seniors who have 5 seasons of experience can only help (Ryan Young, Chase Audige). Should also be exciting to see how much Pete Nance can improve with an extra season in the program, should he take it. Robbie Beran and Miller Kopp as well. And Collins can now have Nicholson back up Young without worrying about whether it would be better to redshirt him.

Also potentially in the works is a new NCAA transfer policy where moving forward all athletes could receive a one-time transfer waiver where they’d be immediately eligible. This change should be voted on in January, and could go either way for a program like ours.

I feel sorry for the 2021 and 2022 high school kids. Probably a lot less opportunities for them with these new rules.

The ruling for fall sports said the extra eligibility won't count against a program's scholarship cap moving forward. While P5 schools in a revenue-generating sport will be happy to go "over the limit" and pay for the new kids to come in, I'd agree with you that non-rev sports and mid-major (and below) hoops will probably be inclined to stay with their current players. Especially since coaches won't be on the road as much for recruiting. There are going to be a lot of 2021 hs kids walking on, I'd imagine, then picking up scholarships in year 2. Does that make sense?

You may be surprised how many athletes are uninterested in staying for another year and are ready to move on with their lives.

Not at all. I knew a few NU football players who were thrilled when their time was done, and an NU basketball player or two or were more than fine with walking away with years on the table. But I'm sure a guy like Pat Spencer would have jumped headfirst into another season of eligibility. My point is, if even one contributor chooses to stay, that's a win for us. You know, like Evan Eschmeyer.

If someone had a standard redshirt, and a medical redshirt waiver, there is the potential for someone to possibly spend more time in college than Evan Eschmeyer with this ruling.

That’s the situation NU QB TJ Green is in. He could, conceivably, play a 7th year of college football. That’s... probably where I’d elect to move on to the next phase of my life. But who knows?

Depends on what further education goals you have and if they can be met at NU via a 7th year.

Isn’t Green doing some sort of crazy data science grad degree that requires another year?
Speaking of TJ, I didn't know that he had a second surgery to remove some orthopedic surgery stuff from his ankle and wasn't ready to play yet until the sideline reporter mentioned it Saturday......
