Don't want to sound like a douche but where can you make $300-$600 working 20-25 hours a week in Starkville. That's minimum $12-$30/hr sign me up. Sure as hell beats $5.50 a game reffing intramurals.

You joined the message board and dropped this: "how about we give you guys a horn and some drill and music in a wool uniform and see how you do at it yourselves?!?!?"

Does that make you feel better? Here's my response.

If you gave me a horn and some drill and music in a wool uniform right now, damn right I'd be lost, but I haven't done this for 5-10 years of my life and I am not receiving a scholarship to do so. However I could say the same to you about what I do for a living.

All these responses show me that you have a piss poor work ethic and a sense of entitlement. You could never work for me or saddawg or half the people on this board - we demand too much. And too much seems to be having a little pride in what you do.

I bet when you graduate you are hoping for a job that you can work 10-2 and get an hour for lunch.

The drumline isn't the problem. I'm beginning to think that there is a laziness issue in the band.

No one is bashing what you do for a living though. I get offended because I put a lot of effort into what I do and I think I am pretty good at what I do. To lump the entire maroon band into a stereotypical 'band geek' type organization just sets me off. Yes, there are the 'band geek' type people in the band, but that does not mean that the entire band is like that. Every group has their exceptions.

It's very offensive to read some of the things people post on here without having any experience of being in a band organization. I guess it is good that the FMB is receiving some attention. Let's me know that people care.

If you do something like don't bring your music, there is no reprimand. There is no punishment for something like that, which is a big problem with overall band sound. But I think there is a laziness for many people. I think that practices are run well, and we do the things that we need to do to make sure we put a good product out on the field. But there is nothing to be gained by people to try hard during practice to learn your spot because nothing is done if you don't. I don't know if there is a way to fix this other than to threaten to take people's scholarships away, which you really can't do.

Always have. The band is part of what makes college football college football. I like what they add to the game.

Every week, I see people that aren't in line. So what. These are college students with busy schedules, most of whom are doing this FMB thing for fun. Few of them are music majors. Many of them have majors that take a require a huge academic commitment, like engineering. The amount of time and effort it would take to get 300 people marching like a DCI band just isn't realistic. I think they do well enough marching.

My gripes?

I am REALLY glad they started wearing uniforms to every game. Shorts & t-shirts last year and prior was an abomination. I know those uni's are hot. But band members have been wearing uni's to football games since knife was first put to bread. But if Al Gore's wet dream comes true and it gets too hot....its the 21st century. I am sure lighter weight, breathable uni's are available.

The band should play louder, music majors or not. Playing louder isn't rocket science. No extra hours upon hours sweating on the practice field should be required for this. Not sure what the problem is. But the FMB isn't as loud as it used to be, and that's kinda sad because it has never been really loud at all.

The DPR has to go.

That's about it.

Oh, and who cut the budget for the patriotic show? I love our patriotic show every year but....fireworks and smoke needs to stay. I missed that this year. And, uh, lose the choir. Choirs and/or non marching band performances never work in marching band shows. Never.

I did actually. When I lived in San Antonio, though. I worked for red bull and could make that much a week. My point was not meant to be literal though. It was to show that I could make the amount of money I receive in scholarship per semester with the band in a very shortened amount of time at college-y job.

Hell, if the band were full of the stereotypical "band geek" they'd be much better. But we have gotten to the bottom of it.

1. The director sucks
2. Some members do not have the work ethic they need to (Lots of 18-22 year old do not)
3. There isn't enough practice time

Those are the three underlying factors. The lack of funding argument continues to be ******** in my opinion, our band is funded better than Troy, Jacksonville State, Middle Tennessee, Jackson State and the like. They may not have the support that those programs have, but they have the funding. Like I said, the funding will get better if they start putting a good product on the field, because I have committed to donate annually if they get their **** together.

that I was shocked that Mrs. Lance makes more than Jacksonville State's band director.

Another thing that I do think would help would be if the marching band was under the athletic dept. When I was there, we were the only band in the SEC that wasn't. The athletic dept. buys some of the stuff for the band, and that would help out with props and flags and stuff like that. Maybe that has changed, I don't know.

wants the band to be good and represent us well, hence the criticism.
