It's pretty hilly from Birmingham on up, plus there's a lot more traffic on I-65 than there is on 55.

We live at Rez and have family in Nashville and make the trip a lot. Much prettier drive and getting through Memphis and dealing with all of the trucks and troopers on I-40 slows you down a lot.

significantly shorter than the other two routes I think but takes the same amount of time. If you can average 60MPH on the Trace it works out pretty good. Get yourself a designated driver and have a few cocktails going up the trace, it doesn't suck.

As long as you're not hitting that I-240 loop around rush hour...while trying to get around Memphis from I-55 to I-40, you will make good time. The trip up I-65 is better highway, and somewhere around the Huntsville area there is a stripclub beside a truck stop called "The Boobie Bungalow". I've never stopped, but the name cracks me up every time.

The difference is barely a few miles depending on your start location. Seems to be more places to stop on the way through Birmingham, though, but the last two times I've gone have been through Memphis.

I have no intention of ever stopping, but I would love to read a scouting report from there.

You could maybe look at taking 25 to Starkville, 82 to 45, 45 to Jackson,TN, once you get to downtown Jackson stay right and it will bypass all of the redlights on the west side of Jackson and will take you on the East side (Which is through the industrial park) to 40. its about 45min longer on google maps by do that instead of Memphis but it might make up for time not having to deal with all of the traffic on 240 and 40 out of memphis.

I used to live in Nashville and have tried everyway to Starkville. This one takes the longest.

Try to hit 65-north out of Bham before 5:00. Lots of construction going on up that way and it is always backed up.

25 to Tupelo and get on the Trace there. Boring? yes. Traffic? Idiot drivers? Construction backups? Nope.

Once you get north of Tishimingo State Park you can boogie. I regularly run 60-70 and haven't gotten a ticket in years. The Trace has never been patrolled North of Tupelo like you're familiar South of it. Plus, federal budget cuts have reduced the rangers presence too.

Hell, even if you do get a ticket it doesn't show on your MVR, and last time I got ticketed it was only $75.

I pass that place several times a year and have always been curious, but too afraid to go in. I figure the dancers probably have more children than remaining teeth to be from that part of TN and work at a truck-stop strip club. I can't imagine that there is even one good-looking dancer in the whole place. If I ever go in, it would be for the freak-show type of curiosity and definitely wouldn't be expecting "Platinum Plus" (or even "The Pony") quality.

If people are staying in Brentwood, the straightest way to go is up to Starkville and to tupelo, then exit barnes crossing road and hit the trace to brentwood. I mean all the way to the end. I believe it's also the quickest no matter what Mapquest says. I beat mapquest's guess to Nashville by 45 mins or better.

To folks staying in Nashville, it's prob best to take the same way, but take the Hohenwald-Columbia exit on highway 402 I believe it is... It's just north of the Merywheather Lewis monument. If you have a minute you should stop there. Take the Nashville highway north out of Columbia to the Saturn Parkway then over to 65.

Oh yea, if you go the trace, if you stop off in Collinwood, there is a general store type place there that has free cookies usually and lots of information.

And funny enough, I have had the opposite encounters with park rangers. I see most of them close to the TN line and north.

I go to Nashville quite a bit and have been everyway possible and the Trace is consistantly the best way. 45 to 40 is the best if and thats a big IF you don't hit construction or a wreck on 40 entering Nashville. I go further up the Trace and take the Leipers Fork exit and try to schedule time for lunch at Pucketts Grocery in Leipers Fork, there is no telling who will walk through the door. I have seen several country music stars come in there. From thereI go over to Franklin/Coolsprings and hit 65 n into Nashville.

Actually, it was to Manchester instead of Nashville.

Tried some interstates and highways via Alabama on the way up and then drove the Natchez Trace back home. I much preferred The Trace. Drive was a lot more pleasant and not as tiring.

The route was about the same or not much slower time-wise. Speeds are slower, but the route is a lot more direct.

There are no stops and you can go 55-60. Jump over to 65 by Nashville. It might not be the fastest but you don't have to deal with traffic anywhere.

I55 to I40 is ok. If you want the best which may be 15 mins. longer do this. MS 25 to US 82, to 45A, to 45, to US 64, to TN 22, to TN 100, to TN 69, to I40, to Nashville. I have been every way mentioned and others. This is simply the best. I have made more than 300 trips in the last 25 yrs.

To the one who thinks I40 is the worst, try I80 from PA all the way to IL. And there are others.

I have to admit the last time I was on the Trace South of Tupelo was back in '97...and I got stopped. Oh, and Hwy 412 is the Hohenwald/Columbia exit you're referring to.

The Trace ends at Hwy 100, West of Nashville. McCrory Lane will take you from there to I-40. The Loveless Cafe is right at the terminus, which is a great spot for breakfast or lunch.

which takes you to I-40 near Lexington, TN is the best route, period. A close second would be the Trace to Hwy 412 to Columbia over to I65. Theseare the only routesI take. I prefer the first because the Trace can be extremely boring and really curvey near the Bay Springs area. If I were staying in Franklin or Brentwood, I would take the Columbia route. If I stay downtown, I take the 45-64-22-I40 route which takes 3:45 minutes from Tupelo.
