Yes, he was wildly crazy and his time at the Hall did not go or end well. But I knew him before he came here and everyone has good and bad in their lives.
The good for Gonzo was there was a time that no one in college BB was more passionate about the game than he.
Clark Francis, many might not remember him, but he was a legend in recruiting back in the day with his Hoop Scoop site that used to rate head coaches and assistant coaches every summer in the off season and Gonzo for many years was listed as the hardest working assistant coach in the game. Something I saw first hand so many years ago when Gonzo was working for Pete Gillan at Virginia. That particular time during a three day HS event on the Seton Hall campus. Two of those days I stood with Bobby and I was amazed at how hard he worked. He had multiple cell phones because he was burning them out calling family members of players, their HS coaches, contacts close to them...he was beyond manic.
I can't tell you how much I enjoyed those two days. Especially at night after the games were played when I and a friend traveled to Italian restaurants and spent hours talking college and pro basketball. With the large bill picked up by Pete Gillain.
That was a far different Bobby Gonzalez than we saw once he was the Pirates head coach.
Manic, exasperating and often disliked, but to be fair I agree with Jaden Daley, the honor is deserved.
