Gee, who could have seen that coming? Is there a single poster on this board years ago that didn't project the very same thing?

NIL combined with free agency will eventually be the bane of college sports.

They might be able to fix the transfer situation (ie, one free, 2nd sit out) but the money will never be controlled.

Unlimited spending and everything done in the dark. And then add unlimited free agency. Its like they asked the most corrupt people in sports to draw up the rules.

Yes, he was wildly crazy and his time at the Hall did not go or end well. But I knew him before he came here and everyone has good and bad in their lives.

The good for Gonzo was there was a time that no one in college BB was more passionate about the game than he.

Clark Francis, many might not remember him, but he was a legend in recruiting back in the day with his Hoop Scoop site that used to rate head coaches and assistant coaches every summer in the off season and Gonzo for many years was listed as the hardest working assistant coach in the game. Something I saw first hand so many years ago when Gonzo was working for Pete Gillan at Virginia. That particular time during a three day HS event on the Seton Hall campus. Two of those days I stood with Bobby and I was amazed at how hard he worked. He had multiple cell phones because he was burning them out calling family members of players, their HS coaches, contacts close to them...he was beyond manic.

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed those two days. Especially at night after the games were played when I and a friend traveled to Italian restaurants and spent hours talking college and pro basketball. With the large bill picked up by Pete Gillain.

That was a far different Bobby Gonzalez than we saw once he was the Pirates head coach.

Manic, exasperating and often disliked, but to be fair I agree with Jaden Daley, the honor is deserved.

As the old adage goes, Be care what you wish for ... lol

I met an old friend at the game vs Manhattan at CAA, (The Stan Gaines game). He had a non sports related admin job at Manhattan. Told him we were going to steal their coach. I dont remember exactly what he said, but it was something like please do!!!!! and the line of people volunteering to drive him to nj would be huge. Maybe if we had a real AD was active at that time it would gave gone better, but I doubt it. lucky he hired Derm to get him some good players.

There's a person who now works for ESPN. Forgot his name. Back in the day he worked at the Daily News and wanted to cover college basketball. I met him a couple of times at high school events and we often sat in media row near the court. He told me he got his start in college BB covering Gonzo. I asked him was it difficult and of course he said yes. My response was why did you choose to cover Manhattan? And he said because no one in the department wanted to cover them because of Gonzo.

We compared notes and everything he went through with Bobby, I went through with him.

A shame because if Gonzo would have just calmed down and not treated people as he did he would have been a fabulous coach. IMO one of the best in his era.
