Oak Park-River Forest student section starts the game out by chanting "please don't sue us!"

When Jacob Keller steps to the free throw line, the chant begins
"Why'd you throw it, Why'd you throw it" ?...And "Intentional grounding, intentional grounding" as Jake Keller went to the line a second time.

Good stuff.. good clean fun. The Friars get the last laugh with an OT Victory.

Got to agree with ramblin, although the "don't sue us" chant was okay by me as the players were not involved with the lawsuit. That was more of a dig on the administration. Fenwick got the last laugh as you mentioned.

Funny, I recall a girls basketball game where the Loyola students were quite nasty with their chanting during the pregame, Coaches just smiled. It wasn't until Pat Mahoney walked in and admonished the students that it ceased. Class act that Mahoney.

You are missing the point. It's not about the thickness of someone's skin. It's about the game experience being redirected from the court to the stands. It's about negativity being recast as adolescent cleverness.

personally, never like chanting. you have players on a court, field or wherever playing their hearts out, which i love and then you have students sitting in the stands as spectators, usually because they are not good enough to play, hurling insults at your opposing student section. just always seemed strange to me. the only people who have earned the right to say anything are the players....rest of you shut up, enjoy watching the game and cheer them.

"God Loves us for Free" - public kids fans when playing private schools

"You can't do that" - after penality by the opposing team.

"Bufferfingers" - when someone drops or loses the ball

New!! "Please don't sue us" - I personally think that is pretty funny and is not a shot at any kid playing.

New "why'd you throw it?" - the intentional grounding. More of a shot against the coach than the player executing it - but yes this one is getting into my grey area.

It's not being soft. it's about being fed up with unsportsmanlike taunting that has no defensible place in youth sports. There is nothing redeeming about it, and it serves to redirect the focus away from the players and play on the court. Brin22 was spot on.

The stands should be loud in their positive encouragement of the warriors on the court. Teens and adults should be smart enough, mature enough, and sportsmanlike enough, to know how to do that without devolving into jeering, taunting, and negativity.
