There was some good old fashion ball busting going on @ UIC tonight for the Fenwick vs OPRF basketball game.

Oak Park-River Forest student section starts the game out by chanting "please don't sue us!"

When Jacob Keller steps to the free throw line, the chant begins
"Why'd you throw it, Why'd you throw it" ?...And "Intentional grounding, intentional grounding" as Jake Keller went to the line a second time.

Good stuff.. good clean fun. The Friars get the last laugh with an OT Victory.

No issue with that. HS kids having fun! The environment was electric. The student sections on both sides were great. OPRF still took that L tho

Got to agree with ramblin, although the "don't sue us" chant was okay by me as the players were not involved with the lawsuit. That was more of a dig on the administration. Fenwick got the last laugh as you mentioned.

Funny, I recall a girls basketball game where the Loyola students were quite nasty with their chanting during the pregame, Coaches just smiled. It wasn't until Pat Mahoney walked in and admonished the students that it ceased. Class act that Mahoney.

You can boo and taunt high school kids to your heart's content while making whatever anti-pussification statement that you think you need to make. Not my cup of tea.

Really not a big deal. It's not like they are insulting someone's race or ethnicity. Some things are taboo this is not one of those. This is typical high school basketball game banter. You should attend a st pats notre dame basketball game. Ruthless.

I think HS kids are a little more thick skinned than up I guys give them credit for. Clearly it had an adverse effect on the Fenwick kids - oh wait .....

It's an interesting and sad study to examine how far we have lowered the sportsmanship bar over the years when it comes to fan conduct. You say that race or ethnicity are still taboo as if that's some sort of proof that the situation is still under control.

I would rather watch a high school game over an NBA game any day of the week. The negative student section participation is just about the only thing I dont like about high school sports.

I realize I'm a dinosaur in that regard.

I also hate negative political campaigning. Can't stand it.

You are missing the point. It's not about the thickness of someone's skin. It's about the game experience being redirected from the court to the stands. It's about negativity being recast as adolescent cleverness.

personally, never like chanting. you have players on a court, field or wherever playing their hearts out, which i love and then you have students sitting in the stands as spectators, usually because they are not good enough to play, hurling insults at your opposing student section. just always seemed strange to me. the only people who have earned the right to say anything are the players....rest of you shut up, enjoy watching the game and cheer them.

Some of the "slogans" or "chants" or the signs in the stands are really quite ingenious and funny. A few that I have heard

"God Loves us for Free" - public kids fans when playing private schools

"You can't do that" - after penality by the opposing team.

"Bufferfingers" - when someone drops or loses the ball

New!! "Please don't sue us" - I personally think that is pretty funny and is not a shot at any kid playing.

New "why'd you throw it?" - the intentional grounding. More of a shot against the coach than the player executing it - but yes this one is getting into my grey area.

What other slick chants and signs have been read and heard at football and basketball games?

"throw a pic, throw a pic" student sections to a Qb that threw the most interceptions in the area... ironically some of those leading the chants were his friends from the area just from a different school.

Since you chose to perfect the IG88-esque art form of escapism over the last six-year period, you missed the numerous threads when unsportsmanlike conduct was discussed.

Had you not preferred to use edgy out of convenience, you would have been able to both enjoy and partake in your campaign of vilification against LA.

Now that MS has returned, you resurrect the matter and are trying to use it as a cudgel.

I simply can't even believe what I'm reading in this thread. I have more reason to be upset with the OPRF students than any on this board and I took no offense. It was all in good fun, the OPRF kids never crossed the line nor did the Fenwick kids. It was truly a fun environment and what high school is all about. Those kids being in a gym on a Friday night giving each other a little grief is about the ideal situation, there are many far worse scenarios that could play out. I am willing to bet that in high school most complaining on this board were engaging in those "worse activities". Stop being soft, there's a reason so many kids are mentally weak nowadays...

It's not being soft. it's about being fed up with unsportsmanlike taunting that has no defensible place in youth sports. There is nothing redeeming about it, and it serves to redirect the focus away from the players and play on the court. Brin22 was spot on.

I simply can't believe that there are supposedly mature adults who think that it's not only acceptable, but a fun part of the game.

Just goes to show you how far we have devolved.

While it is virtually impossible to prevent such behavior, there is a healthy fear of consequence parents and school administrators must instill in students. Unfortunately, we are hearing of this sordid behavior more often; and too frequently, parents and administrators are either rolling their eyes or shrugging their shoulders.

The basketball court should be a safe zone. Everyone should wear Bobby pins. When you think about it, we should really abolish defense completely. It is not good to get in the way of someone else's success, which is the point of playing defense.

The court should be a battle ground. Play hard. Play clean.

The stands should be loud in their positive encouragement of the warriors on the court. Teens and adults should be smart enough, mature enough, and sportsmanlike enough, to know how to do that without devolving into jeering, taunting, and negativity.

Exonerate, not abdicate, is the far better word choice in the example you provide. One cannot abdicate someone else. If a court were to abdicate anything, it would be its own responsibility to do something.

Completely acceptable for HS students to taunt HS students as long as they are within certain bounds, it's part of being in HS. If what was said here is all it was, bravo.
