I wonder if the NFL will ever do something to make FG harder. It’s become automatic from 60 yards and in. The only thing I could see is adjusting width of the posts.

I hope not. Too much tinkering already, though most of that has been to protect themselves from lawsuits, or player safety as they like to call it.

Falcons have a kicker named Younghoe...and he just won the game against the Aints with a 57 yarder.

I was gonna come in here and argue about how DS is wrong, but then I saw New Orleans score to take a 1-point lead with 1:00 left in the game. Kickoff to the Falcons, who gained 30 yards on offense, then drill a 57 yard FG to win the game. That’s not supposed to happen.

While we’re at it let’s eliminate free throws in basketball and sac flys in baseball.
I get that. But watching an offense drive 30 years for the kicker to kick a FG is boring. Eliminate the FG & you’ll get a lot more 4th down conversion attempts, which is one of the most exciting plays in football. I think it would improve the game.

It’s routine these days. 5 field goals in that game. Boring, except for the last one.

Make it where you can hit the kickers?

maybe require the hold to be 10 yards behind line of scrimmage or require free kick

Narrow the goalposts just a little. Not that it would’ve mattered for Koo today.

Fans want high scoring, exciting games. How about they just play overtime rules in regulation and just alternate offenses starting at the 25 for four hours.

It’s what the Saints didn’t do the previous 59 minutes that caused this to happen not the last minute.

And that was on a PI call.

I knew the Saints scored too early.
Getting the ball at the 30 Yd line with a minute to go and only needing a FG, outcome was almost impossible not to foresee.
The 30 Yd PI didn’t help matters for the Saints but that Asian kicker the falcons have has been really good the last several seasons for them.

Well giving up a pick 6 and a very stupid special teams TD pretty much sealed the Saints fate.
Losing 2-3 defensive guys didn’t help matters.
Inability to run the ball much of the second half didn’t help matters either.

I wonder if moving the XP back somehow made the NFL produce better kickers?

I know it sounds weird, but how did 50+ yard FGs become so automatic? More soccer players? This is like if the PGA suddenly had most players averaging 400 yards off the tee.

(As I'm typing this, the KC kicker came up short on a 65 yard attempt).

So I'm just wondering if the NFL suddenly needed 32 yard XPs to be automatic, and maybe that caused them to spend money searching for amazing kickers? IDK...

Meanwhile, I'm assuming State's kicker still sucks?

No offensive TDs for the Falcons today, but they win. Probably not a sustainable strategy.

I haven’t found an easy stat for the past 5 years, but this is 2009-2019. Not exactly automatic.

They should just give one of the defenders a really fast broom like we’re already doing in quidditch

You have to let it play out the rest of the season as the weather gets worse. The percentages go down.

The Browns lost today because their kicker missed an extra point and had to try and score at the end of the game instead of trying a field goal.

I think they should keep the field goal crossbar the same width, but have it on a motorized track so that it moves back and forth around 5 to 10 miles an hour during the kick to make it interesting.

But something similar happens in at least half the NFL games. Maybe because of parity, or it's scripted. You have to wonder sometimes.

I think it's fewer soccer players, like none, and more kicking specialists with kicking camps and coaches from the youth levels on up. Along with real strength and conditioning work for kickers. You won't see another Garo Yepremian in the NFL, or even college football.

The Patriots kicker is a former linebacker.

Don't make a field goal any tougher. It's hard enough for referees to know when somebody is holding or not and when they should throw a flag. I thought I used to have a firm grip on what is a penalty. I'm not so sure anymore.

I wouldn’t consider 84% automatic.

extra points I agree, NFL kickers are 98.6%
