Each stat list shows JM’s rank amongst Rays OF players with at least 250 AB’s on the season. The parenthesis next to Mangum’s name shows his overall team rank in the same category (also only looking at players with 250+ AB’s).

If you want to know who the unanimous best outfielder for the Rays was this past season, it ain’t even 17ing close. Mangum was also objectively a Top 5 hitter in a lineup that was in the top half of MLB in runs scored and team OPS. Was also the 2nd leading base stealer for the team with the most stolen bases in all of MLB. Not bad for a rookie.

ETA: Went back and added what I feel is the most important overall valuation, which is 162 game average WAR for the 2025 season. WAR is a cumulative statistic, not an aggregate number like batting average or slugging percentage, so as a comparison tool between players you have to level it out with a 162 game average. In this ranking, Mangum surpassed Brandon Lowe to the #5 spot. FYI….Brandon Lowe was an All-Star this season. In summary, when he was on the field, Jake Mangum was the 5th most valuable position player for the Rays in terms of total production. Only Aranda, Caminero, Diaz, and Walls were more valuable.

OPS:
1) Jake Mangum - .698 (5th of 10 overall)

1) Jake Mangum - 2.3 (5th of 10 overall)
2) Chandler Simpson - 0.4
3) Josh Lowe - 0.3

Batting Average
1) Jake Mangum - .296 (3rd of 10 overall)

The sad thing is he could've had this season last year and in 2025 we would've gotten to talk about where he was in the race for the batting title. Instead, we got to watch another front office enamored with modern stats take a year off his career.

I am a big Mangum fan and think he will stay around a couple years. That said, the one thing holding him back is his hitting against LHP. This is why he hasn’t played everyday

This was an issue earlier in the year, but he finished very strong against LHP. He finished the season hitting .279 against LHP, with a .650 OPS against LHP. Improved a lot in the last 5-6 weeks of the season. I believe in mid-August he had a sub-.200 average and a .450 OPS against LHP.

He did play every day. He only sat for 10 games all season while he was healthy and activated to the roster. He missed 32 games with the groin injury, and still finished 4th on the roster in games played. Only Caminero, Diaz, and Brandon Lowe played in more games.

He wasn’t on as many starting lineups second half of the year. He did pinch hit late in games to play but wasn’t playing full games as much.

Thats kind of true, but also a bit misleading.

In the 2nd half, he played in 72 of 81 games.
He started 60 of those 72 games, and played every inning in 59 of those 60 starts, including 5 games that went into extra innings. 4 of the 9 games that he missed entirely in the last 3 months were all in the last week of August. Likely an undisclosed nagging injury that needed some intermittent rest….the 4 games prior to that stretch he was hitting .467 so he damn sure wasn’t sitting due to a slump.

Furthermore, 5 of the 9 games that he didn’t start but subbed in late were in the final 2 weeks of the season, with the expanded rosters, and the Rays completely out of contention. That was just the team getting looks at other guys here and there to get inexperienced folks some AB’s. Not much to do with him.

For the season as a whole, he started 102 of 118 games he appeared in.

He played a complete game in 99 of 102 games that he started (and went 9 full innings in another one).

He played in 118 of 128 games that he spent on the active roster and not on the IL. And again, he was 4th on the team in games played and 6th in plate appearances despite only being available for 128 games.

By all modern MLB standards, he was an everyday player as much as anyone who isn’t an MVP contender possibly can be.
