I got home and watched the end of the game. On the 4th down measurement it looked to me like the nose of the ball covered some of the post. Flood was saying it was a first down. Maybe it was the angle of the camera, or the post was not held straight up. Anyone know the rule, does the ball have to be beyond any part of the post or does it have to be beyond the entire post?

Rule #1..Grant needs to get the extra 1/2 yard on 2nd down sweep instead of running OOB with the marker right in front of him. Rule #2 and Rule #3. You got to make a yard in 2 plays. RU got a very favorable spot there anyway. No way from my view did he make it.

I don't want to pile on Grant...he almost single handedly won the MSU game for us, but, I cannot believe he sprinted out of bounds on that second down, turning it upfield almost guarantees a tackle, but the tackle would've been past the first down marker. Terrible decision.

And, I agree the spot was generous to begin with. It was NOT a first down

Agree. I was yelling at the TV that Grant needs to put his shoulder down and drive forward rather than jogging out of bounds.

Rutgers lost the game because of a atrocious defense that allowed over 750 yards including 400 yards rushing. The offense scored more than enough points to win most games especially against a 2 win Maryland team.

It never should have mattered anyway. Total collapse by the team in the second half was astounding.

I agree, whatever adjustments that interim staff made at halftime far outweighed the results of one play. Fludd and our staff got out coached in the second half.

Funny thing on Grant running out of bounds a yard or 2 before the 1st down stick, the officials Never stopped the clock as they should when a players goes Out of bounds.

Doesn't matter. We lost the game. As I tell my kids all the time, your excuses are your own.

I totally agree with your assessment...but your continued childish reference to the man's is just childish and tiresome.

the official leaned the post back and the tip of the ball still hit the post

He was short. Before the sticks were even brought out, I said he was short to our email group.

The spot was generous.

I respect your opinion but I'm being as classy as the guy that continues to lie about not knowing the policies he violated and tried to cover up. I'll stop calling him Fludd or Fudd when he is gone.

the revenge of Maryland.....last year we were 25 pts behind, scored late in the first half, then quickly again early in the 3rd quarter......we had to survive a 2nd down and 2 Maryland had, or so, by stuffing the line on three consecutive runs......no measurement was needed in that game, however....

this year, pretty much a flip of that....they stuffed us late to secure the 3 td deficit comeback win.

that makes two games where we had a reversal of fortune.....last year we beat Washington state with a late deflection of a 4th down pass as WSU was marching down the field....this year, a tipped pass is caught, a march down the field late by WSU....and this time they get to the endzone.

The ball has to be past the last chain link so if it it is hitting the stick it should be a first down...as for someone above mentioning the Maryland touchdown that was reversed you have to maintain possession throughout when u are in but go out of bounds

if you go to the video you can see at 1:05 mark that the pole is leaning significantly back on the measurement. THAT was definitely a first down by that measurement. however I still hold that we got a really good spot there.

and I believe the reason they didn't stop the clock on Gratnt's run is they feel he actually went OB going backwards saying his forward momentum was already established in the field.

so really bizarre end game stuff there..but not the first time we've seen it from the B1G refs.

Obviously it's the camera angle, do you actually believe the refs didn't see a half inch of daylight there.
The nose of the football doesn't touch the metal pole…simple

I always thought the one end of the first down marker ought to have one or both of two things. A base leg that comes off the bottom at a perfect right angle that requires it to lay flat on the field and a bubble level on the pole that requires the perfect vertical upright position.

a ref can also have a thin tool that if slid down between the ball and pole would take out all question..if it touches..first down. no judgement required for all to see.

This. The camera angle is clearly from slightly behind the football, as indicated in the diagram below.
