First game I've attended - A few thoughts

1. Dee Bost has a serious chance to be the best true point guard that MSU has ever had. The things that kid is doing as a freshman are amazing.

2. Elgin Bailey - I have never seen a kid work so hard to be completely out of position on defense and for rebounds. I mean that in all seriousness, also. He is constantly moving and gives a heck of a lot of effort, but he just never seems to be in the right place on the court. Vanderbilt completely abused us in the paint every time Bailey was in the game.

3. The team, overall, is as athletic and fun to watch as any team that I've seen play at State. If you don't hustle and give 100% effort, you're not going to be playing this year. Kudos to Stansbury for this and for becoming the all-time winningest MSU coach in SEC games. I'd like to post a sarcastic "Fire him" comment right here, but I'll just let it go.

4. As this was the first game that I attended, it was also the first time that I realized that we sit four seats to the right of Greg Byrne... IN THE UPPER DECK. It is extremely refreshing to know that we have an AD who puts the university before himself and sees himself as somewhat of a common man. While I don't know the history of where our former ADs have sat during basketball games, I bet there are few who hung out at the top of the Hump. Also, the man had a crumpled up piece of paper that he was scribbling on the entire game. I don't think he ever quits working.

5. The halftime reception for Mullen and his staff was great. The crowd was deafening and it's definitely a great time to be a Dog.

One side note - We stopped by an old friend's place in Starkville before the game who is one of the few people that I can claim as an inside source. Anyway, he claims that Mullen called the coaches together for a mandatory meeting a few days ago after the Knoxville paper reported that Wilson had accepted a job a UT. In front of everyone, he asked Frank point blank, "What the hell is going on?" Frank said that he had not taken the job jet, but he was still thinking about his options. Mullen said that he'd do the thinking for him and told him to get the hell of the room and not to plan on ever working for him again. Mullen then talked recruiting for the next couple hours with the remaining coaches.

I think we can safely say that we now have an AD and football coach that are not going to take BS from anyone.

Phil Turner has improved ten fold. It's amazing how much his game has elevated. Bost is unreal. I hope we can keep him for 3 years.

I really can't believe what Turner has done either. I use to cringe every time he stepped on the court.

Having only made the San Diego game this year, I've been quite bitter. However, I'm starting to turn. The guys really are playing very well right now.

Last year, I couldn't understand for the life of me why we had even given Turner a scholarship. This year, he's helped make our team nearly impossible to defend on the perimeter. Between Stewart, Turner, and Johnson, they're all guys that you better not give an inch to shoot. However, if you get too close, they can drive right by you and slam it.

One of the BIG differences that I've seen with the team this year is that there isn't anyone who is afraid to take it to the rim and get knocked down. Bost did an exceptional job driving it last night and drawing fouls. It's amaxing how much better your offense looks when you have guys that will do that. I don't think we'll see too much of the "pass it around the perimeter and jack up a 3" offense this season.

One thing I forgot to write about though... Right before one of the timeouts towards the end of the game, Ogilvie got called for a foul after bumping Jarvis. During the timeout, he walked towards the bench complaining, and Stallings gave him a sudden and pretty rough hip check, I guess trying to show him what he had done. Don't know if anything will come of that, but I can tell you that Bobby Knight would have lost his job for that.

We've been rolling for a few games now. Most teams are capable of short hot streaks. Keep this up for a while, or beat a good team, and then I'll consider getting excited.

has started 0-3, we beat a team on the road that just beat two top 10 teams. I think that was a huge win and has given this team confidence to up their game.

Right now, I'd rank the West:

1. LSU
2. MSU
3. Ark
4. Auburn
5. Bama
6. Mississippi

If we can somehow come out of Red Stick with a win on Wednesday, it would be huge. We'd have a 2-game lead on everybody, with road wins at our top competition for the West title (even though Coach34 says winning the West doesn't mean anything).</p>

....if we can do that, I'll start to feel like we can go dancing. Until that happens, I think we are NIT bound. We just dug too big of a hole. LSU will be tough.

but up until then, not so much. In fact, for all the criticism Stans gets from you and a few others for weak OOC scheduling, LSU's is weaker overall (although they did play Utah who is better than anybody we played). Here are their non-conference wins:

Jackson St.
Alcorn St.
Northwestern St.
Centenary
Troy
Cal St. Fullerton
Grambling
Nichols St.
McNeese St.
Washington St.
LA-Lafayette
SE Louisiana

I do think they have a pretty good team, but I wouldn't go so far as to say they've got the best starting 5 in the SEC.

Kentucky has probably the best 2 players in Patterson and Meeks, but I dont think their 5 is as good 1-5. LSU puts a pretty damn good line-up on the floor. Winning the West over them would be a very good feat by us and our staff should they pull it off.

Yes they have played a weak schedule, but they did have a new coach to transition to this year. Plus, they have Xavier coming up after they play us.

I'm not ready to punch an NCAA ticket nor am I even sure that MSU is the best team in the SEC West, but I do know that they're fun to watch and the team has a very bright future. This year will be fun and if Varnado comes back for his senior season and Stanbury can find a decent back-up post man, they could be VERY good next year.

Not trying to harp on it, but I am completely unimpressed with Bailey. He still looks like a kid playing in his first game of college ball. Turner and Ravern have improved drastically and even Benock seems much more poised to me, so I'm a little dumbfounded as to why Bailey is having so much trouble adjusting. I could care less about what he does on the offensive side, but his defense and rebounding was absolutely horrible last night.

Their 5th starter may not be better than LSU's 5th starter, but as a whole, their starting 5s are better. You can't just throw out guys like Patterson and Meeks. They more than make up for any advantage LSU's 5th starter may have over their 5th starter.

Edited to add that most of LSU's current starters managed to go 6-11 in SEC games (counting the tournament) last year with a coach who had a Final Four on his resume (so by your definition you know he's a hell of a coach). I need to at least see them actually beat somebody that might possibly finish with a winning conference record before I'll agree that they might have the best starters in the conference.
