Last year we moved Richard Figueroa down from 1 to 3 after he was mostly inactive in the first semester. He was obviously the returning NCAA Champ, but his season the year prior was a roller coaster one. On top of that, we felt guys who were competing deserved to move up based on more recent results.
My point is that there are some number 1's that have the resume to keep them at 1 if they miss time (or even in some rare cases if they lose), and there are some that don't. If Mesenbrink missed the Iowa dual, we wouldn't drop him.
We frequently reshuffle weights when a wrestler creeps too high because of a win that means less as the season unfolds. We did it at 165 this week - if you have time, look at the results for the wrestlers we have ranked 7-17 and have fun ranking them.
In other words, subjectivity is okay. Also, the hands are tied because subjectivity is verboten. -> <-
If you try it at two B10 tournaments, you could become the Rutger Elite of sarcasm.
I think that using Rutger and Elite in the same sentence confirms your number one ranking

Larkin beat Knox before Blaze did. That is the sum total of the Flo argument on this (correct me if I’m wrong @Kozak ) and why the simple “ladder ranking”algorithm they use has to get chucked out the window every once in a while to reorder, like they did at 157 this week. They just didn’t deign to do it at 133, too busy whiteboarding Wartburg - UNI I guess.
Yeah, Voelker is out for the year. I believe he had shoulder surgery
Yeah, he’s also ranked #1 somehow.. think there was also a previous #1 at a diff weight that also lost to a high schooler.
They penalized Lilledahl for losing to a teammate, that doesn't count in his record per the NCAA, but I guess losing to a HS kid doesn't count in their rankings. I am really not a rankings guy, since the only one that matters is the coaches' ranks, but i love how flo tries to justify what they do.
Rankings are always fun to discuss as fans, but it's difficult to argue with pollsters who don't use common sense. I just ignore them and know that the only ranking that matters is the one that will be released March 21, 2026. I'm sure that's how Cael and team look at it as well.
Yes I love it too, at least flo tries and explain their rankings. Intermat used to not. They used to just put out a list of names and numbers next to them. Now they are doing a small logic explanation I noticed.
Regardless, Cannon looked good enough this year that flo gave him #1.. never heard of a #1 that had no shot.. 0%
