The Red Sox drafted him in the 29th round even though he hasn't played baseball since high school. He signed, but isn't going to play this summer and is going to finish out his career at Florida and hopes to play in the NFL after that. I know a 29th round pick isn't a high pick and I'm sure they didn't give him much money, but still, what were the Red Sox thinking?

Personally, I think it was a smart move by the Red Sox. It's obvious the kid is a very talented baseball player and doesn't have a shot to get to the NFL, so why not take a (low) risk by signing him with your 29th round selection.
I would feel different had it been a top round selection, but they basically lose nothing by taking him. It was a very proactive and intelligent pick IMO.

Still, best case for the Red Sox is they'd get a 22-year old player in a couple of years who hasn't played at any level in 5 years and hasn't played above the high school level. There have to have been players available with better odds of making the majors even in the 29th round.
Then you get to the issues of signability and money. The ones available with better odds of making the majors may be harder to sign and/or require more money to get signed.
His options are going to be limited after this season, so they probably got him for a bus ticket and Snickers bar.
You're not going to spend much money on a 29th round pick anyway, so there's not much to save. Also, Driskel has 2 years left at Florida, not 1. Plus he'll almost certainly at least be able to catch on as a free agent with an NFL team even if he's not drafted. He'll be OLD before he ever puts a baseball uniform on, if he ever does.
The kid was a top 150 player in baseball. Could have played baseball in college if he wanted. Looks almost identical to Cord except was the number 1 qb.
Michael Vick was drafted by the Majors despite not playing baseball after his 8th grade season ever again. Everyone gets drafted to play baseball, and most of the time they don't actually care about how good a player is... it's all about "potential"... see our resident five tool player. Were any of yall aware Renfroe only got 20 true AB's in high school and he hasn't had much experience playing baseball?*
