I know MR is going nowhere. I understand that. In all honesty he probably deserves at least another year or 2.
There is a reason we studied history in school. Mistakes of the past comes to mind looking at this.

Here is some food for thought I will leave you all with.

MR record vs top 25 teams over his career at Oregon St

16-40 vs Top 25
5-26 vs Top 10
3-14 vs Top 5

Of those 40 he lost:
32 scored 30 or more points
16 scored 40 or more points
8 scored 50 or more points
3 scored 60 or more points

12 of those loses I would consider "Blow outs" losing by 4 TDs or more.
Last nights loss was the worst of his career.

40-16 versus top 25 is pretty darn good...
26-5 versus top 10 is even more impressive...
14-3 versus top 5 is Alabama like!

Thanks for posting this... I feel much better about our future, which is saying something because I've felt pretty good about things so far...

Those look like respectable numbers. 40-16 vs top 25? not too bad for oregon state.

What am I reading wrong where you say 40-16 (40 wins and 16 losses is how that is read) but of those 40 he lost? WTF? that dont make sense if you say he only lost 16 but then 40 lost? Am I the dumb one who is reading something wrong.

Are we going back to the idea that Oregon State had a Solo-Flex and NordicTrac in their weight room and that was it?
Great coaches find ways to win especially after 20 yrs of coaching. Great coaches don't get beat by 60 pts. Doesn't matter if your coaching highschool or Pros.

Sorry, was trying to put my point on Losses. SO I put them first. I see how that can be confusing.

So Riley has beaten numerous top 10 teams throughout his career, with lesser players. That's finding ways to win. That makes him a great coach.

On the other hand, he did lose by 59 points the other night. That means he's not a great coach.

The reality is you can make an argument both ways... you want so badly to say, "look at his record at Oregon state! That's all you need to know!" The problem is that you refuse to take into account the difficult circumstances of his time there.

We won't have an answer about how good he is for another few years, but if he strings together 10-2, 9-3, 11-1 type seasons, then we will know he is better than you want to give him credit for.

If not, then you were right all along and many of us were wrong. Until then, we can just pound our chests and act like we are right and the other person is wrong.

59 is too many but 43 is different.

Jimbo Fisher has won a national championship and got drubbed by Louisville this season by 43 and it wasn't that close. Then a few weeks later played Clemson to a 3 point game.

As I said in a different thread match ups make the difference. Also factor in the snowball effect of things going wrong and continuing to go wrong and soon things are out of hand.

When you watch games in hindsight or in a vacuum you lose sight of what actually happens. Momentum is a huge part of football especially at the college and high school level. I don't like the IF stuff, but if MRI gets a tackle on JT on that 3rd down blitz, Nebraska gets the ball back down 7-3 after having just drove 14 plays for a FG. The complexion of the game is changed. But one 3rd down conversion led to another.

One game overreactions are never good.
