They went out and got Walker Howard too who was a higher rated QB than Kamario Taylor.
Howard may have been more highly rated than Taylor out of HS, but by the time OM landed him it was already known that the rating was bogus. He was running like 3rd or 4th string at LSU. He didn’t even see the field at La Monroe this past season. I have a hard time believing that he was some huge investment. It’s pretty certain that LSU told him in very plain terms that he wasn’t going to ever see the field there….and they were an inferior program to OM at that time.
Maybe he was only brought in to take care of his daughter and his fake dog? I don’t know. That’s my point. Teams make boneheaded decisions in this portal era and Ole Miss is not immune.
Define “bone-headed” decisions. You can’t know what’s bone-headed and what isn’t without knowing the numbers.
OM knew they had nothing behind Dart in 2023, and were in trouble if he got hurt. He didn’t get hurt, so it was a non-issue. But that still doesn’t make it bone-headed to spend up on a serviceable back-up just in case it does happen. And again, I don’t think Howard cost them much at all.
Yes, they won with their evaluation of Chambliss and if you think it’s because they have some magical powers fine. But if you asked 130 offensive coordinators in CFB who was going to have the bigger year Chambliss or Arch Manning, every one of them would pick Arch, including Weis Jr.
That’s the thing. I don’t even think they won in the “evaluation” of Chambliss. He’s not some ultra-talented diamond in the rough that everyone just missed on. He’s on nobody’s draft board, in spite of the year he just put up in the SEC….which tells you that the real story is that Kiffin’s system drastically raises the ceiling for very average QB’s. That’s what happened with Chambliss, and that’s what would have happened with Sanders if they ever actually needed him. And ultimately, that’s why Kiffin is getting $91 million guaranteed, and why he kept inexplicably getting 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chances as a HC after 17ing up time after time..because that level of offensive acumen and productivity is super rare. Put Arch at OM and Chambliss at Texas, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Arch won the Heisman and Chambliss looked like Shapen or Lagway.
I think we had all hoped that the same would hold true for Lebby, even if not to the same extent as Kiffin. But it just hasn’t happened.
Shít just works out some times. I also want to reiterate, I think signing Kromenhock was dumb, I just disagree with the fact that Ole Miss’s coaching staff bats 1.000.
I don’t think they bat 1.000 either, but they didn’t even have to at QB while Kiffin was there. We seem to mostly agree on LK….although my opinion on that is heavily tied to how much it cost us, which I don’t know. If it only cost us like $200k to bring him in, that’s not a huge deal. He’d be similar to what Howard was for OM in that regard.
