As you know , you and I are quite different in most things except our love for UK basketball. I have studied and read much about coronavirus over the last week. Johns Hopkins university is my main source of info.
The general belief is that when test kits are widely distributed, we are going to see a huge numbers increase in cases. JHU is predicting more than 500,000 will be identified immediately with many more to come. NY State Gov, Cuomo stated the number will be in the hundreds of thousands in New York State. Ohio Governor says 100,00 cases minimum currently in Ohio.
My hope is that this virus runs its course, the death toll is low, families are not financially ruined by it and lastly, sports can continue.

A very disturbing article , I think in JAMA, states that if we could escape huge death numbers it would be beneficial for up to 70 percent of the population to get the virus and hopefully effectively fight it off. That would make it less of a threat in the future years. If not, this could be around next year. So, I didn't answer your question but yes, it is possible our sports teams may be impacted this Fall as well.

The people in charge of our country today are better than any other leaders we’ve had in a long while.

Ha. You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but I am as well. And I think you're completely delusional.

Regardless, this is a problem that any president would struggle with. There are no simple solutions. Politics are irrelevant. I hope the current administration is able to do a fantastic job handling it going forward.

if you are trying to say this is nothing but political fear mongering by the dems.......... then why did Trump declare it an emergency? He in on it too?
Not what I said. The virus is to be taken seriously and precautions must be taken. But the media stokes the panic. Did you see this media reaction to the swine flu when 60 million were infected? Of course not.

A state of emergency or national emergency opens up funding... it really doesn't mean anything other than having a blank check. This is a glorified cold there's a pandemic of the common cold at any given time you've just accepted it as a part of life

Barry Obama was just starting his first term then and he was a combination of Jesus Gandhi and the Dalai Lama there was not gonna be any kind of panic stirred to try and reflect poorly on him

Been following it a lot. I waffled back and forth on how long I thought it could last but now I feel like things will start getting back to normal starting next month. I have no doubt in my mind we’ll be sitting in Rupp for Madness on time!

things will start getting back to normal beginning this week hysteria like this can't and won't go on for very long. By the time the tournament was supposed to tip off Thursday everyone's gonna realize they basically called it off for nothing. People should be pissed at the damage that's been done and being done to the economy

incredible that a common cold can shut down China and Italy and kill so many there. Its a wonder why you cant get a job at the CDC with your brilliance.

I never said anything like that. I just said it was fear mongering. Because it absolutely is.

Look at China and Italy......... fear is needed or else people like the one yahoo who has it refusing to self isolate will spread it and end up killing someone with diabetes or a copd.

i meant events like conventions and such and then sports starting back up. I get what they’re doing by keeping the patient count down so they can actually house those who need it when severe sickness.

yeah look at a communist country where people are starving and eating bats and rats (which started this) and whose corrupt government can't take care of its billion citizens and they dont care to. And Italy who's in bed with China. Glad we're not them.

Don't forget the super geyser under that place out west. Forget the state.

If you are talking about Old Faithful it is in Yellowstone in Montana. But the problem is the super volcano underneath Yellowstone, it only goes off about every 600,000 years (IIRC) but that is probably plus or minus a hundred thousand years or so, and there are some signs it is warming up. The last time it went off it left about four feet of ash in Kansas, (among other states) and how far away from Montana is that? Too humongous to contemplate, really. And yeah, that would be a legitimate national emergency.

Blue brothers we’re all under stress. Rafters is our homestead let’s have sanctuary and get this out. Say what you need to say and let’s get through this. It’s like the 4th step of AA, you’ll feel better once we get it out.

Yeah, but no panic, we are talking about hundreds or thousands of years for the time scale. At least that is the hope, but mother nature is kind of unpredictable.

They don't know how it started for sure. The bats were just a theory. But we are not a Communist country here and still eat that BS...rats, coons, possums, snakes, ******** out of hogs.

CDC’s worst case scenario 240 million Americans infected and almost 2 million deaths. That’s a pretty serious Pandemic for the USA.

Once again, how much panic was there when the swine flu infected 60 million? None. Why? The media wasn’t going to rock the boat of the biggest moron who has ever been in the White House. He was a total assclown who waiting 5 months to do anything while it spread like wildfire because he was totally incompetent. Yet, the United States still fully recovered and never cancelled anything.

I've convinced myself and 4 friends that our colds last week could have been corona and joking aside the cough was extremely weird and I said at the time I'm "sick but not really". Pretty strange man, I know how it sounds but it really was a confusing sort of cold. To consciously think "my cold is weird" before I knew about corona is wild.
I had something similar. Wife had gotten back from a trip to Hawaii where she met her daughter's family...who live in Seattle. Little boy was sick and my wife spent one day in bed while over there. She got home and about a week later I started feeling bad. Kind of like a half-flu that would never fully kick in. Spent most of one day in bed. Low grade fever would come and go over 3 or 4 days. Same with the flu/achy feeling. Kind of a weird dry cough. And that's about it. If it wasn't for all the media hysteria I wouldn't have given it a second thought. Feel fine now, but it was strange. Didn't worry about it and still don't.

Best answer so far to the question posed.
To add a few thoughts: the virus may likely disappear in the warmer weather as does influenza. Like the flu though, it will move to other parts of the world during our summer. The concern is it will then be spread here through human contact in the fall and winter. A vaccine is still 12-18 months away, so in 7-8 months when we’re gearing up for basketball season the virus may come back with a vengeance. So in short, with many unknown variables, there are no guarantees about next season being unaffected. That’s the short answer to your question.

The perhaps counterintuitive notion then is that we would like a large number of people (but not old or health compromised) to get the virus now so they will have immunity later, blunting the magnitude of its comeback.

I don’t think anything is guaranteed at this point. What I’ve read is it’s not yet clear what effect, if any warmer weather will have on it. There are lots of new cases in Australia and Brazil where it’s late summer.

Just stay out of the state of Washington. 57 deaths from this thing in the US. 40 in the state of Washington.

Mostly at a nursing home where the thing spread unchecked.

Correct. Extraordinarily fragile people that inflated the death toll early and being used to fan the flames of fear for an already concerning situation.

The scientists at the CDC and WHO are the ones saying this flu is potentially much worse. The media is merely reporting it as they should. It's a life or death situation for some folks.
China locked down Wuhan. Italy, France and Spain are now on lockdown. Italy's Med care system is maxed out. If you don't think any of that is newsworthy....don't know what else to say.
It's not a left wing conspiracy to bring down Trump.
Sticking your head in the sand, fingers in your ear and believing Trump when he calls it a hoax, won't make this go away.
This is science.
