when you're putting up 40 pts per game??

I really could care less who he hires - as long as we see good results this fall.

"make his hires work" means you get people to fit the holes you have and that they are capable of filling. No arguement from me bad hires are made, but at the same time give Mullen a little credit for trying to balance new guys with some older guys with experience. I just don't see why some folks are so critical of hires that haven't even coached a practice.

Ok, so Mullen destroyed Torbush's defense, what, one time? If you base a hire on how bad you beat somebody 85% of these coaches could never get another job at a bigger or better school.

On it's face it ain't a bad hire either because he ain't coached a down here. Can't disagree about hiring a DC on the rise, but Jeeze, not every DC in the country is "on the rise". There ain't that many of them just like the number of good head coaches. All I'm saying is give Mullen a chance to put together a staff. We sure ain't any worse off than we were the last five months.

the game was played on January 2, 1993.

We had 2 blocked punts...a special teams melt down that would make Famous Amos and "Red" Stringer jealous.

but at least one of them, and laid out a wide receiver too. Natrone Means was on that team, as was Curtis and Leon Johnson, who later each had 1,000 yard rushing the same season. Leon played in the NFL for a long time.

Dubose would have been light years better. Dubose has been in the state for the last five years and is familiar with recruiting Mississippi.

A couple of things:

First of all Cheese wasn't that bad. He wasn't that good, but he was acceptable, and he was far from ******. I wouldn't be surprised if he is a DC again. Ron Cooper was ******. And for the 100 millionth time, he also was a DB coach, and that's what he was for us. It's not like we asked JB Grimes to be the DC.

Secondly, we have better talent on defense right now than we do offense. We have enough guys coming back that really all we need is someone competent. Torbush is probably competent enough. If he's not, I trust that Mullen will let him go back to Carson-Newman.

Torbush might turn out to be good in that as far as I can tell, he has had ONE bad stint. We have people asking Texas A&M people about him, why not ask UNC, Bama, or Ole Miss people about him. So, he has had one bad stint at a school that was on the decline, big deal. See the part I said about Mullen above. He also has HC experience that may be valuable to a guy like Mullen. Plus, he probably knows the area fairly well from his SEC days.

That said, no this hire doesn't excite me. Assuming he is the DC. But I don't think it's a bad hire either, personally I would have tried to get TCU's DC, but I understand that may not be feasable. If it's not, well as long as we do the best we can, I'm OK with this.

As far as the hires that we've made so far, I find it somewhat amusing because it looks like they had an Internet rumor poll and picked whoever the fans wanted- including the GP people. Less Koenning? What? Carl Torbush, Hmmm...I've heard of him. Keep Felker and Reed Stringer because they are nice, and then throw in Hudspeth for the sixpack. It's NUTS!

I would have liked Rocky Long or Dick Bumpas, and they are both older guys.

As for the one ***-whooping, here is my common-sensical approach to that question - If I am an offensive coach and I absolutely undressed an opposing DC's defensive scheme, I would not go looking for that guys phone number when I got my first gig. I would call the guy that gave me fits.

Mullen, coming from smaller conferences, had an excellent opportunity to find a coach from those conferences that is a defensive whiz, that gave his Utah and BG teams ulcers when they played them.

Or someone like Dick Bumpas, who is under Patterson's shadow and you would think would love the opportunity to coach in a major conference. Look, I am going to give Mullen AND Torbush a chance to succeed. I am not declaring the guy a failure before he coaches a down at State, I am just saying that I am surprised at the hire and I would have gone in a different direction.

against the offenses we faced ranked higher than 100, he gave up an average of 400 yards...thats awful...no way he ever becomes a DC in a BCS conference aGAIN

Just another one of Croom's dumb moves to fit his agenda. Seems Randy Shannon is taking the same path Croom did.

but I think he has earned the benefit of the doubt to be given a chance. Cheese turned out to be a ****** coordinator as I expected he would. Torbush may be just as ******, but I can be open to seeing what he does

I agree. aTm has not been setting the world on fire on defense for quite some time and has not made an effort to recruit on that side of the ball. With the amount of experience he has and the job he has done at stops other than aTm, he should at least be given a couple of seasons to show what he can build in Starkville and not be dubbed a losing selection before he even gets here.

after the game. During the melee', I 'accidentally' bumped a guy in the head with my cowbell and I remember my pissed off girlfriend at the time (later my even more pissed-off wife) calling me a redneck for fighting. Looking back on it -- and the events since -- I should have hit her with the cowbell instead.

it may have lead to MARTA, I don't remember. I think a UNC fan grabbed and rang a state fan's cowbell, and that started it

The only other point I make is that it is tough to make a call about a guy based on one game where "yours" were so much better than "his".
I give you that his A&M stint sucked stump water. But Joe Paterno, Bobby Bowden, Bear Bryant had rough years too. Not saying he is anywhere near their class, to the contrary, he ain't close. But let's see what Mullen has going. Hopefully, he knows something about the guy that he thinks will fit what he wants to do here. It is just hard for me to see labeling a guy a bad hire that has a good history. Of course, if we could get C34 in charge none of this would matter......600 yds per game offense, 10 TDs, allow 0 points and minus 23 yds defense......oh, and don't forget we would have at least 40 future NFL hall of famers on schollies each year...had to get that gig in......
